A Dark Roast Even I Can Like: Organic Colombian From Barista On Duty

The Drink: Organic Colombian From Barista On Duty
Type: Dark Roast Whole Bean
Overall Rating: Four Out Of Five Coffee Mugs

If you read through this blog, you’ll find many references to me being more of medium roast fan then a dark roast drinker. Darker roasts are growing on me, they don’t all taste burnt to me anymore, but I’d still rather have a medium or light roast that’s loaded with flavor. However when Barista On Duty sent me a sample bag of his Organic Colombian Dark Roast, I had a feeling that I might just like it.

The Organic Colombian had an aroma that was full of flavors, just as I’ve grown to expect from a Barista On Duty Coffee. It was like walking by a kitchen where something delicious was cooking on the inside. There was a nutty flavor mixed with hints of cinnamon, honey, melons and raisins. It was all over the spectrum.

The taste was a dark roast flavor that was inviting and not over done. It made me wonder if Johnny Milton, the man behind Barista On Duty is trying to convert me into a dark roast drinker. It was a very drinkable dark roast flavor with a spicy flavor that mixed in about mid sip and took control in the after taste. The nutty-spicy flavor dominated the taste, but there was chocolate undertones that really perked up my tongue.

This coffee had a medium to heavy body when brewed in a french press.

Like all Barista On Duty coffees, the Organic Colombian isn’t cheap. $10 for two 3 ounce bags of home roasted or $15 for a 3 ounce bag of pan roasted, however you are paying for quality and personal attention (he’ll roast your order however you like).

If there were more dark roast coffees, I would start drinking darker roast coffees on a regular basis. The Organic Colombian Dark Roast earned a well above average 4.0 on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. If you’re a dark roast fan, or just thinking of becoming one, you should try this coffee.

Fine Print.

Horray! Welcome to the “dark” side!

Hmmm, after reading this I will give a dark roast another try. I too find that a French Roast often kills the taste, producing bitter notes. This is likely from poor roasting. Though I am not quite sure if I can afford BoD’s prices!

  3. Nice Review Mike! I Must Say It’s A Great Coffee Even As Med Roast, But As Far As A Number Scale It Be Hard To Say More Or Less. Very Well Rounded Cup Of Coffee, As Far As Drinkability It’s On The Mark. “This coffee had a medium to heavy bed when brewed in a french press” Heavy Bed? Where Ur In Bed Sipping This Coffee! SMH. Thanks Again For Your Time And Attention |_|B

Haha about the bed part! I may have needed some more coffee when I was writing this post because I must have been thinking about taking a nap!

i also thought the comment about the flavor having a ‘heavy bed’ was more
sensual./sexual than barista on duty-ish but this just goes to show
you all what an organic coffee can take and still not taste TOO dark side like.

a thought…. could the coffee industry devise a system to
capture and condense the hot air exhaust vapors which
are emitted from a roaster? they seem to be half the
experience to me. maybe the results would be coffee perfume?
or cologne? from what i know (darn little) about coffee roasting
practices, a lot of the flavor and taste goes up the stack
    in the darker bean creation.

Yeah sorry about the bed typo. I was definitely tired!

That’s not a bad idea to make a coffee perfume or cologne, of course I have zero idea of how coffee is actually made.
