A Non-Flavored Coffee That Tastes Like A Flavored: Ethiopian Sidamo From Jim’s Organic Coffee

The Drink: Ethiopian Sidamo Amaro Gayo From Jim’s Organic Coffee
Type: Light Roast Sun Dried Natural
Overall Rating: Four Out Of Five Coffee Mugs

Some coffees are loaded with flavors, then there’s coffees like Ethiopian Sidamo Amaro Gayo from Jim’s Organic Coffee that tastes like a flavored coffee even though nothing has been added to change the natural smell and taste. I knew that this was a Mike kind of coffee as soon as I looked at the description on the bag.

A quite literal wild blueberry taste with an underlying tone of cocoa powder and slight hints of citrus and blackberry. Rich and clean throughout.

Just opening the bag unleashed a delicious blueberry aroma. It intensified in the french press and reminded me of when I picked blueberries on a school field trip. It smelled that fresh!

The taste was dominated by the blueberry taste. It was almost like I had bitten into a fresh blueberry, full of juices. It was so berry that it could almost be enough to be called flavored coffee. There was a mild nutty flavor underneath with a touch of lemon.

It had an exceptionally smooth feel and light body.

Bonus trivia, did you know that this coffee is exported through Ethiopia’s only female miller/exporter, Asnakech Thomas. She is a native to the Amaro region and decided to return in 2005 to her homeland to work to improve the quality of the coffee and local communities.

A bag of Ethiopian Sidamo Amaro Gayo from Jim’s Organic Coffee isn’t cheap, $12.50 for 12 ounces, but if you like lightly roasted coffees that are full of flavors, then it’s worth trying. Plus, Jim’s Organic Coffee says that the premium price allows money to be reinvested into the community via social programs like schools, clean water and medical care.

I couldn’t get enough of this coffee. It earned a solid four on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. Flavored coffee fans, this is the non-flavored coffee that you should try. Dark roast fans should stay very far away from this coffee. I mean it, don’t come an inch closer.

Fine Print.

Jim’s gear is really good!!! Have to admit, I haven’t tried this one though. I’m torn though, as I like flavored coffee from time to time – as long as it’s bold… So, should I risk it???
    Nice review Mike!

Since you like bold ones, I would probably stay away from this one! It’s good, but definitely not a bold coffee.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Yum. This is the year of the Ethiopian Gayo, I have yet to have one that wasn’t delicious.

I am super jealous right now! There is really nothing like a good blueberry flavor. I remember the intensity of it in a Ethiopian Chelba from Dillanos and the Ethiopia Sun Dried Sidamo from Starbucks a while back. I really need to get me hands on some this! Thanks for the great review.

I’m super jealous too! I wish I had access to the Ethiopians from Dillanos and Starbucks. There’s no Dillanos near me and the Starbucks in my area have the limited selection for the most part.

in most cases i worry about what a roaster adds to their coffee
to get it to taste like something else. in this case, nothing has been
added to get their coffee (organic!!!) to taste like something else.
    i like that chemistry.
muah. i might break the bank for a sample.
    thanks for the update Mike.

so . i did order some on Mikes props.
one thing i should mention is that small orders
online seem to carry a larger than life cost on the
    s&h part of the transaction….
it was $12.50 for 12 ounces AND $ 8.21 for UPS from the shop
in W. Wareham MA to PA.
    and that’s $8.71 for UPS ‘Ground’ btw…..

    • Mike says:

That’s the major drawback that I’ve noticed about ordering coffee online for me. I think that there has to be cheaper ways to ship it, but I’ll admit that I don’t know much about shipping coffee.

I am truly jealous! I can’t say that I have had Ethiopian. If I had then you can tell it was a very memorable experience. Well, now I’m going to have to try some.
