There’s a lot of ways to make coffee – the drip coffee maker, the french press and the espresso machine to name just a few. The Aerobie Aeropress Coffee And Espresso Maker is a unique looking combination of all of them and claims it can make better coffee than them.
The AeroPress wasn’t created by a coffee expert or even a coffee company, it was invented by Stanford University engineer instructor and scientist Alan Adler who is best known for his Aerobie flying ring. It’s a Frisbee like toy that set a Guinness World Record for farthest throw. He is a coffee drinker, but he’s not exactly the person that I envisioned making a next generation coffee maker.
It all started because he was disappointed by home brewing methods, he thought that there had to be a better way to make coffee. He took a scientific angle to solve the problem and ended up creating a totally different method of making coffee.
He studied the way the coffee was brewed, identified what he considered to be the idea conditions for brewing, then spent more than a year creating fifty different prototypes, before coming up with the AeroPress.
It’s a simple and slightly odd looking gadget. It looks like a french press combined with a laboratory beaker, but the real question is what does the coffee taste like?
Last week, I received an AeroPress to review and to answer that question. This weekend, it was in my testing laboratory, also known as my kitchen. I’m giving it a thorough test drive, looking to see how it compares to more traditional methods of making coffee, as well as examining their bold claim.
The most important thing that I’m looking at is the quality of the coffee it makes. They say that the AeroPress makes better coffee because it makes the coffee in just thirty seconds, is brewed at an optimum water temperature and uses finely ground coffee. They say the result is a coffee that has more flavor, tastes smoother and doesn’t leave grit at the bottom of mugs like other methods.
Plus, they claim that the AeroPress creates coffee that has lower PH levels, reducing the acid and stomach problems that plague some people.
They also say that the AeroPress is easier to use and to clean than other methods.
The early results are positive, but stay turned for the full review later this week.

Erich – I’ve heard nothing about but good things about the Aeropress and you’re not the only one that said it replaced their other methods of making coffee.
Alan – Thank you for taking the time to stop by the blog and explaining it.
Hi Mike,
Good luck with your AeroPress test. I just wanted to clarify that the pH scale works in reverse. A higher pH (like AeroPress brew) is lower acid. Each unit is a factor of ten in acid. So 6pH has one tenth the acid of 5pH.

Best regards,
Alan
I have an Aeropress. I have been using mine for the last month and am very impressed with it. I have put my French Press and my auto drip in storage for my personal use. This coffee maker is so simple to clean, and makes an outstanding cup of coffee. It is perfect for that single cup of coffee. I have not tried it with a group yet, I do still use the French Press when I have people over. I highly recommend these to everyone.
