We had a good run together, filled with lots of coffee reviews and some good laughs in between.

I hope I was able to share the story of good coffee with you, but now it’s time for me to pass that baton off to someone else.

As you can tell from my lack of regular posting, slow responses to comments and emails, I haven’t had enough time to give DSOC the proper attention it needs.

That person is Jean-Sebastian (don’t miss his post on 5 secrets he doesn’t want you to know about him).

While we’re two very different people, I think we both have the same thoughts and ideas towards good coffee and a sustainable movement around it. I wish him the best of luck.

To everyone else, I want to thank you for reading the blog, leaving comments and being part of the amazing DSOC community. I want to send a huge thank you to the coffee roasters that provided us coffee to review and all of the other coffee companies that made this possible. Originally, I started to list everyone by name but that started to turn into one giant blog post, so let me just say that you know who you are. Thank you.

You’ll see me popping up from time to time to do a guest review, but for now I’m taking a break and focusing on some other parts of my life. I hope you understand and enjoy the future of Daily Shot Of Coffee.

Is it really almost 2013? What happened to 2012? This year flew by! 2012 was an amazing year for me for so many reasons, one of those reasons was all of the amazing coffee that I tried. There were so many great coffees that I had a chance to try that it was hard picking out my favorites from all of them, but I think I was able to pull together a short list of what I’m calling the Daily Shot Of Coffee Best Coffees of 2012.

Putting together this list gave me a chance to look back at the coffees that I’ve reviewed over the past 365 days. Only looking back can I see trends in my own tastes in the coffee world. 2011 was filled with Ethiopians and other delicious coffees from Africa. 2012 was filled with coffees from Central America and darker roasts that weren’t like the ones you find at Starbucks.

Just for the record, these are in no particular order. These were the best of the best, there’s no way I could rank one of these over another.

Fara Coffee – Holiday Roast
This coffee not only kept me caffeinated this holiday season, but it reminded me just how much fun coffee could be. It was full of flavors and kept my tongue entertained to the last drop.

Barista On Duty – Cameroon Boyo AA
What can I say about Barista On Duty that I haven’t already said. If you get a chance to try this one or any of the others from this roaster, try them!

Desta Epicures Guild – Ethiopian Harrar
In 2011, Ethiopian coffees were my favorites hands down. This one was a reminder in 2012 of just how great a coffee could be from this African country.

Sea Island Coffee – Jamaica Blue Mountain
A lot of coffees that are surrounded by hype and high prices, are often disappointing. This one wasn’t disappointing at all and really showed me what all of the hype was about.

Sea Island Coffee – Geisha, Costa Rica
Another coffee surrounded by hype. Coffee roasters from all over the world fight over this coffee, bidding hundreds of dollars just for a pound of it. I still think that’s a little bit out of control, but I can understand why they go to such great lengths now.

The Secret Squirrel – Cold Brew
It’s the first time that a cold brew coffee made the list. I didn’t see that coming, but then again this wasn’t just any ol’ cold brew. This one was definitely a stood out from the rest and one I’m looking forward to again next summer.

Boca Java – Kenya Cruising
This was a thick, strong coffee, stronger than I thought a coffee from Kenya could be. It would be a great every day kind of coffee.

Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company – Lighthouse
I had never heard of this roaster until 2012, now I can’t wait to see what they have to offer in 2013. This was a light roast blend that I couldn’t get enough of!

Velton’s Coffee Sumatra Lintong Sanggul
I tried a number of amazing coffee from Velton’s this year and it was hard picking my favorite. This one stood out because it wasn’t like any Sumatra that I’ve had before. Most of them are dark and strong, this one wasn’t like that at all. It was a taste experience that I won’t forget for many years.

Thank you to all of the roasters and coffee companies that sent their coffees in for review in 2012 and make this all possible. Coffee roasters, if you would your coffee reviewed in 2013, please send us a message via the contact form.

Huge thank you to all of the awesome readers that are reading these reviews. What were your favorite coffees of 2012?

I love reading about coffee, almost as much as I love drinking about coffee. I’d like to think that you could get all of your coffee info here, but I have to say that there’s some really great coffee blogs and sites out there. They give us a look into the world of professional baristas and coffee roasters, give us the latest news from the coffee world and a whole lot more.

Back in 2010, I put together a list of 42 must read coffee blogs, it included blogs that I read on a daily basis and others that I had stumbled across but were worth sharing. I had no idea how popular the post would get, it’s still one of the most read pages on the site. However, the list was starting to fade out of date. A lot of the blogs included on the list were no longer publishing and there were a lot of new faces that deserved a mention, so I present to you this updated list of required reading coffee blogs.

Update: Started at 42 and now we’re up to 50 awesome coffee blogs now!

A Coffee Diva
She’s not a coffee expert, she just really loves coffee.

Barista On Duty
In between a hectic schedule filled with lots of time at the roaster, Johnny Milton finds some time to write too.

Baristing
Alex’s thoughts on coffee and the world.

Boise Coffee
Don’t think this site is limited just to Idaho.

Okay, you’re down to the final stretch but you have just enough time to make sure the coffee lover in your life gets the perfect gift.

If you have an Amazon Prime account or don’t mind paying a little extra for shipping to make sure it gets there on time, check out these ideas: Coffee makers, grinders, mugs or books. Yes, there’s lots of great coffee books.

Now if that isn’t an option, you can still get the coffee addict something locally.

Local, Independent Coffee Shop

They can help you find the perfect gift and you’ll be helping out a local business. Win, win if I do say so myself.

A good coffee shop has staff that’s willing to listen and recommend a coffee based on your ideas. Are they are a dark roast drinker? I’m sure they’ll have something. Fair trade or single origin, I’m sure they have those options too. You get the idea.

Gift cards are a safe bet if you don’t know exactly what kind of coffee they like.

Also, keep an eye out for a farmer’s market or craft fair. You might be able to find coffee there or even a gift like a bar of soap infused with coffee.

Grocery Store

Now I wouldn’t go get them Foldger’s, I don’t think that’ll turn out well. However, many grocery stores are now carrying more and more coffee options.

You can check out Whole Foods and all of the ones that I’ve visited have a number of options for local and or regional roasters.

If the person on your list is a flavored coffee drinker, you could get them a bag or two of flavored beans to try. I’ve seen some grocery store that have the two ounce bags, perfect for making a pot of coffee and a stocking stuffer. I know coffee snobs, it’s a sin, but it’ll be okay, I promise.

Department Store

Stores like Target have a lot of different options when it comes to coffee makers. I see more and more stores like Target with French Presses now. If the person you’re buying the gift for doesn’t have a French Press, you need to get them one.

Now, all you have to do is get crazy and brave the crowds at the stores. Good luck!

Type: Whole Bean Single Origin
An early Christmas present made it’s way to my door last week. It came from the fine folks over at Fara Coffee, an Austin, Texas based coffee roaster. The present that they sent me was a bag of their Finca Santa Rita Holiday Roast.

Background From The Roaster

Velvety toffee and warm honey fused with notes of bright lemons and wild blackberry make for a roast that is well-rounded and smooth throughout.

Farm: Finca Santa Rita
Region: Matagalpa, Nicaragua
Elevation: 1,113 Meters
Growing Methods: Shade grown, sustainably harvested and traded

My Review

This Holiday Roast started with an aroma of honey and blackberry mixed. It was almost tea like. There was lemon in the background and hints of nutty scents.

From the first drop, I knew it was my kind of coffee and very drinkable. It was a medium-light roast, with a light body (weight on my tongue) and super smooth sip. Not a hint of bitterness.

The taste had hints of tea, blackberry and lemons. There was a nutty, woody flavor all around it. It finished off with a blackberry syrup after taste. Yum!

Twelve ounces of this Holiday Roast costs a reasonable $8.99. I would’ve expected it to be more with all of the flavors loaded into it.

Final Score

I loved this coffee, it earned an excellent four out of five rating on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. If you like coffees with lot of flavor, try this one. However, if you’re one of those dark roast drinkers, that like your coffee smokey and dark…I would skip this one. Or get crazy and give it a shot! You might like it.

—

Fine Print.

You still have time to get that coffee lover on your holiday shopping list something special. So far, I’ve posted about gifts like brewing gadgets, grinders, mugs and even books.

If none of those appeal to you, I’d recommend a coffee subscription, they’re kind of like the Netflix’s of coffee. Once a month or so they send your loved one new coffees to try. It’s a lot better than a gift card or trying to guess what coffee to get them.

GoCoffeeGo

GoCoffeeGo is one of my favorite spots to buy coffee online, not just because the people who run it are awesome. The main reason that I like them is that they have such a wide selection of quality coffees from premium roasters across the country.

You can pick a coffee from their website for your special loved one or you can get them a coffee subscription and each month they’ll get a new coffee. Coffee is delivered directly from the roaster so it’s fresh and GoCoffeeGo offers ten different subscription options.

The subscriptions pretty much cover every kind of coffee drinker from espresso enthusiast to single origin and microlot coffee geek. There’s even a decaf option. I don’t really get the whole decaf thing, but it’s out there if you’re interested. Plus, I know there’s a lot of dark roast drinkers out that read this blog, so that’s another option you might want to consider.

Learn more about their subscription options.

Other Great Coffee Subscription Services

Craft Coffee

Great way to give the gift of three new coffees every month. Perfect for the hardcore coffee geek that loves trying new coffees from third wave roasters.

MistoBox

If you want to give them the gift of four new coffees every month, check out MistoBox. Like Craft Coffee, it’s geared towards someone that’s really into specialty coffee. If they like Dunkin’ Donuts, one of these subscription services might not be the perfect gift.

ideal brew

Still technically in beta, ideal brew is the new kid on the block. Like Craft Coffee, they offer three new coffees to try every month.

This is a guest post by Laura. Learn more about how you can guest post for Daily Shot Of Coffee.

I’m not afraid to admit that I’ve only recently been introduced into the sumptuous throes of gourmet coffee. Why? Because I bet my coffee grinder that there’s plenty of others who are utterly oblivious to the hidden world this liquid luxury has to offer.

At uni I was all about getting an instant caffeine fix so at that point even beans were off my radar, but now having come full circle in my coffee drinking career, I’m a fully-fledged gourmet coffee convert.

But what’s become more shocking than my somewhat seedy choice of coffee in years past is the abundance of people who are totally in the dark about gourmet coffee (me being one of them not so long ago). Anyway, I thought it was high time I share my understanding and give you a bit of an education on what this coffee actually is, shed some light on the myths and blast the misconceptions surrounding the rumours it’s just a clever marketing technique to trick unsuspecting consumers into buying.

So what makes gourmet coffee, gourmet? Believe it or not gourmet coffee is actually a real thing. Now I can understand your suspicions that someone’s just gone and thrown the word gourmet into the mix, after all, it does sound cool, but truth be known gourmet coffee is actually made from top tier coffee beans that are plucked from the Arabica Coffea plant, commonly found at the high altitude of about 3,000 feet. This altitude makes for the perfect climate meaning that the soil is in the best possible condition ensuring these particular beans deliver a richer and fuller flavour compared to regular coffee or blends made from the Robusta Coffea plant.

Beyond where the plants grow, another tell-tale sign of gourmet coffee is the amount of caffeine found in each bean. Interestingly the coffee beans pulled from the top tier contain less caffeine and as a result, these beans are considered to be higher in quality. Weird, right? Who’d have thought the lower the caffeine content, the higher the quality?

In terms of the taste, well, this is where it gets exciting. Having been a coffee fan for my entire adult life, I’ve spent a good few years looking for a blend that gives me everything I need. I’ll avoid any rich, strong puns here and just say, I think I’ve met my match. What’s more? There are so many blends to try and taste and due to popular demand, gourmet coffee is totally accessible. Unlike the olden days when it was a luxury reserved for the wealthy and powerful, this specialist coffee is now a widespread and affordable option for everyone.

Now I’m in no way an expert in the area of coffee, I think if I knew everything about it, things would turn boring fast, but I like to compare gourmet coffee to the new kid in town that everyone loves even though they don’t try. Fun, a bit different and always doing something cool.

How will you know it’s gourmet coffee?

Because there’s no regulator deciding what is in fact the real deal, you have to be careful about what really is gourmet coffee and what’s an impersonator. Typically, gourmet blends are produced on smaller estate farms so quality control can be ensured at every level. When you’re looking at the pack, see if it mentions where the coffee is grown because if it doesn’t mention a specialist growing process, chances are it isn’t gourmet coffee.

That’s probably what I love most about gourmet coffee. Plucked and roasted with such care and pride, the end result demands appreciation, respect and a whole lotta love!

Well, now that you have a bit more knowledge on what gourmet coffee is, maybe you’ll feel inspired to try something new. In the meantime, I’d love to hear about your experiences with new and specialist blends. What’s the best coffee you’ve ever tried?

(Read that interview here to learn more about ideal brew, especially if you’re looking to try new coffees every month.) Not too long after that interview, they sent me some coffee to review.

In other words, they sent me some coffee to review back in the beginning of November, I tried them and took notes, then the whole rest of the month disappeared. Now, I’m finally catching up, so without any further ado let me share with you my thoughts about three coffees that came via ideal brew.

For those of you that are into coffee labels as much as me, Brandon did tell me that these labels are just the prototype.

The Drink: Signature Blend from Julian Coffee Roasters
Type: Medium Dark Roast Whole Bean Blend

I started with the Signature Blend from Julian Coffee Roasters, an Indianapolis, IN based coffee roaster.

The Signature Blend greeted me with a dark roast aroma, more than anything medium roast. There where hints of smoke mixed with nuts and chocolate. In the background there was a pine flavor, like walking through a forest of pine trees that reminded me the hoppiness of an India Pale Ale.

A dark, dark chocolate flavor coated my tongue when I took the first sip. It was definitely in between a medium and dark roast, with just hints of the darker roast. There was a pine flavor too that really reminded me of drinking a craft beer IPA.

The coffee had a heavy body that coated my tongue. It was smooth with just some bitterness around the edges.

The signature blend earned an above average 3.5 on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. It was good, very drinkable, but nothing stood out about it.

The Drink: Organic Guatemalan – Santa Rosa from Harvest Cafe Coffee Roasters
Type: Whole Bean Single Origin

Next up in my French Press was the Organic Guatemalan – Santa Rosa from another Indianapolis based coffee roaster. This one is called Harvest Cafe Coffee Roasters.

It had an earthy aroma that mixed with nuts and chocolate.

An earthy flavor dominated the taste and it had a dark roast influence. There were hints of nuts, chocolate and wood.

It was a very heavy bodied coffee, but smooth with a hint of bitterness/sharpness towards the end.

The Organic Guatemalan was also in the good category, but nothing amazing either. It also earned the above average 3.5 out of 5 on the rating scale.

The Drink: Guatemala Huehuetenango from Bjava
Type: Whole Bean Single Origin

Right away, from the first sniff, the Huehuetenango stood out. It had a tartness of cherries, aromas of chocolate (dark and creamy), surrounded by a forest of wood scents and nuts. A hint of caramel sweetness, lingered behind it all.

The taste was darker than I expected from the aroma. I was guessing medium or light roast, it was definitely in the darker category. However, it definitely wasn’t over roasted. It was still loaded with flavors. It had a dark chocolate flavor that mixed with a nuttiness. There was cherry around the edges and a caramel sweetness that rounded out the sip.

It was smooth, little bit dusty on my tongue and a unique after taste that mixed sharpness with bitter tartness.

The Huehuetenango earned an excellent four rating on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. It stood out with lots of great flavors.

Overall, I have to say I’m impressed with ideal brew. It’s not often anymore that I get introduced to three new coffee roasters that I haven’t tried before. Add in the fact that they try to get the coffee from the roaster to the drinker as quick as possible, and it’s a coffee subscription service that has my attention.

Fine Print.

The history of coffee growing in Jamaica is long and varied. It has grown from a slave based industry to a series of plantation growing and roasting companies that is the basis of the industry as we know it today.

Coffee growing in Jamaica was introduced by the British. In 1730,the then governor of Jamaica Sir Nicholas Lawes imported Arabica seedlings from the island of Martinique. These were cultivated initially in the foothills of the Blue Mountain Range around St Andrew. This gradually expanded into the Blue Mountains themselves up until 1768.

Over the subsequent decades and indeed centuries efforts were made to upgrade the quality of the coffee produced. However events were accelerated in 1943 when Canada refused to accept any further imports of coffee from Jamaica. At this time Canada was the main importer of Jamaican coffee in the world.

In response to this the Jamaican Government set up the Central Coffee Clearing House. This was in an effort to control the grading and quality process of the coffee being produced.

Subsequently the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica was set up in 1950. This then led to the Jamaican Government passing an Act in 1953 controlling the naming and grading of certain types of coffee.

Specifically, this was the Coffee Industry Regulation Act 1953 Regulation 2. This act specified what name that a coffee bean grown in a certain region of Jamaica could be called.

It also specified what size and type of coffee bean could be used in a specific type of coffee. This led to what is known as the Blue Mountain Range of coffee we know today.

It is a coffee much desired and sought after the world over. This applies to connoisseurs ,lay people and, indeed, members of the aristocracy alike.

The Blue Mountains of Jamaica are located between Kingston in the South and Port Antonio to the North. These mountains rise to a height of 7500ft (2300m) , making them some of the highest mountains in the Caribbean.

The climate in this region is predominantly cool and misty with a relatively high rainfall. This, combined with an abundance of rich, fertile soil and good drainage make it especially suited to the growing of coffee.

Quite often these mountains are shrouded in mist. This feature has led to it being called the Blue Mountain Range. The mist also protects the coffee plants from the worst ravages of the tropical sun.

The Coffee Industry Regulation Act specifies what coffee can use the Blue Mountain label. These coffees are authorized and certified by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica. This covers certain areas in Jamaica, namely those of Saint Andrew, Saint Thomas, Portland and Saint Mary. Only coffee grown in these areas can rightly be named Blue Mountain Coffee.

There are three types of coffee grown in Jamaica.

Coffee grown at an altitude between 3000 and 5000ft (1700m) is called Jamaica Blue Mountain.

Coffee grown between 1500 and 3000ft (910m) is called Jamaica High Mountain.

Coffee grown below 1500ft (460m) is called Jamaica Supreme or Jamaica Low Mountain.

In Jamaica all land over 5500ft is classed as a forest preserve. No coffee growing or other type of cultivation takes place in these areas.

The Coffee Industry Regulation Act 1953 Regulation 2 allows for five classifications of coffee in the Blue Mountain Range. These are:

BLUE MOUNTAIN NO1- 96% of all the beans to have a screen size 17/20 whilst containing no more than 2% defects.

BLUE MOUNTAIN NO2- 96% of all the beans to have a screen size 16/17 whilst containing no more than 2% defects.

BLUE MOUNTAIN NO3-96%of all the beans to have a screen size 15/16 whilst containing no more than 2% defects.

BLUE MOUNTAIN PEABERRY-beans with a screen size below 15 whilst containing no more than 2% defects.

BLUE MOUNTAIN TRIAGE- beans from all four of the classes whilst containing no more than 4% defects.

In all of the classifications there must be no ‘elephant beans’. They must also be of a Bluish green or uniform colour and must be free of all foreign matter. Black and sour beans are not allowed.

These growing conditions described, together with the strict screening and quality control process give blue Mountain Coffee it’s distinct flavour. It is invariably described as having an intense aroma with fairly good body and free from any off-flavours.

This makes Blue Mountain an ideal coffee for those with a discerning palate, which means that it suits those of us looking for a new coffee experience.

In keeping with the standard of excellence imposed by Blue Mountain Coffee, it should be noted that these coffee beans are specifically used in the manufacture of Tia Maria. This is an exclusive coffee based liqueur.

An ideal accompaniment with a cup of Blue Mountain No 1 grade.
