Bodum C-Mill Grinder Review

by Mike on October 7, 2009 in Coffee Equipment Reviews,Coffee Grinders

Bodum 5679-01USA C-Mill Blade Grinder

Bodum C-Mill Grinder

Product Features

  • Slanted grinding bowl rotates the coffee for a more even grind
  • Grinds 45 grams of coffee beans
  • Easy one-touch operation
  • Plastic with stainless-steel bowl and blade
  • Cord storage located in bottom of unit

A few weeks ago, Community Coffee sent several bags of coffee and a Bodum C-Mill Grinder to review. After spending some time in my test kitchen, the results are in.

The short answer is that I liked it for being an under $20 coffee grinder, but it could be better. If I could combine it with my Mr. Coffee Electric Coffee Grinder, it would be perfect.

Compared to my Mr. Coffee Grinder, it does score a lot points:

It scores points for being very quiet. The Mr. Coffee Grinder is loud enough where I’m afraid it will wake up my neighbors. The Bodum Grinder is quiet enough where I could grind coffee in the kitchen with someone sleeping in a bedroom and not hear it at all.

The Mr. Coffee grinder had an unbelievably short power cord. The grinder practically had to be right next to the wall. The C-Mill Grinder had a normal sized cord that made me feel like I could breath again.

However, it loses some points on some key features:

The C-Mill has slanted design to ensure that the beans are all ground evenly. However, the actual results were hit and miss, that sometimes left large chunks of coffee beans intact.

The Mr. Coffee Grinder has different settings for the amount of cups you’re making and what type of coffee maker you’re using. The C-Mill has none of that, so I had to judge by eye when it was done, or at least as close as possible to being done as I could get it.

The instructions weren’t much of a help either in that department. The only guidance that it gave is to not run the grinder for longer than thirty seconds because any longer could result in the motor over heating and the coffee getting burnt.

The most annoying thing about the C-Mill Grinder is that it’s difficult to clean. The Mr. Coffee Grinder has a removable chamber that can easily be washed. The C-Mill has to be washed with a dry cloth or brush. It’s not nearly as effective and I found it almost impossible to clean completely.

The Good

  • Grinds Coffee Beans For Better Coffee
  • Quiet
  • Longer Cord

The Bad

  • Difficult To Clean
  • No Timer On It
  • Unevenly Grinds Coffee

Overall, it did get the job done, but there are better grinders out there. For the price, I’d recommend it because it still helps create better tasting coffee, then buying pre-ground coffee.

You can buy this through Amazon or other sites, but I found it for the lowest price at the Community Coffee site. Buy it at Community Coffee for $19.95.

Thanks for the review, Mike. I think I’ll be sticking with my Mr Coffee until I finally break down and get a good burr grinder. Once I got over the short cord, I was out of complaints about the Mr Coffee. It’s the best [blade] grinder I’ve ever owned, by far.

No problem on the review Allen, thank you as always for reading. I think, I’m in the exact same boat as you. The Mr. Coffee will be my every day one until I get a burr grinder.

Oh Mike. Mike, Mike, Mike. LOL You need a burr grinder!! Community Coffee also sells the Krups burr grinder in the 60 dollar range, and that’s what I have (I bought it from Crate and Barrel though about 3 years ago).

I love it. I love it. I love it. You’d have to pry my cold dead fingers from it.

I actually wrote the lone review on Community’s site for the Krups. I was surprised there weren’t any. Maybe no one else but me wanted to spend 60+ bucks on a coffee grinder…lol.

Seriously, it’s worth the money. It’s a serious-business coffee grinder. Removable/washable chamber for the grounds, medium length cord (not super short, but not super long either, so it’s perfectly adequate), not too loud but not “quiet” either, but it’s got cup settings AND grind settings.

This is what I think of ANY electric blade coffee grinder: I use a $19.95 Krups blade grinder to grind my whole spices rather than my Sacred Beans (read as: it’s got an inferior job in the kitchen because that’s all it’s capable of).

This weekend I’m going to make a video for you of my Special Coffee Pot. I’ll email it to you ;)

A burr grinder is definitely on my wish list right now. It’s probably the weakest point in my coffee brewing process now.

Can’t wait to see the video!

I don’t think I will be picking up this grinder, all though I need one pretty bad.

It’s better than nothing, and for the price it’s great. But if I were to buy a grinder right now, I would look for something higher end.
