Café Tres Picachos – Puerto Rican Coffee That Will Wake You Up
The Drink: Café Tres Picachos
Type: Puerto Rican Ground Coffee
Overall Rating: Three Out Of Five Coffee Mugs
Growing up, I had several Peurto Rican friends with parents that were always willing to invite me over to enjoy their traditional cooking. The food was great, however, I’ve never had the chance to try any Puerto Rican coffee until now.
I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I opened up the bag of Café Tres Picachos. The package was in Spanish and I don’t remember much from the two semesters of Spanish that I took in high school.
Luckily Google Translate was able to help me understand the Café Tres Picachos website:
The Café Tres Picachos Company, established in 1960 and was acquired in 1999 by the Rivera Martinez family, who have a history of planting and processing Puerto Rican coffee. Their mission is to develop the best coffee that meets the most demanding standards and shows the excellence of Puerto Rican coffee. The farm has 290 acres, most of which is dedicated to growing coffee or bananas.
I’ve had a lot of strong coffees like Earthquake Blend and Wake The Fcuk Up, but none of them compare to Café Tres Picachos.
After brewing it in the French Press, the Café Tres Picachos had an aroma that was an enticing spicy nutty mix with hints of honey and chocolate.
However, the taste could only be described as strong. And not your average every day strong, it was extra strong with a side of strong. I tried using less coffee grounds the next time around, but the power of the coffee stayed the same.
It was a bold, but not burnt flavor. It had a dark roast flavor that dominated the entire sip. Underneath that overwhelming dark roast flavor were hints of chocolate.
It had a very smooth feel to it and a medium body.
I tried it in the Moka Pot and the results were similar.
Overall, it was strong to the point where it was almost too strong. At some point, I would like to try some more, maybe from a fresher whole bean package and see if the flavor characteristics aren’t so overwhelmed by the boldness.
It earned an average score of three on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale, although I think could score higher if it were fresher.

Thank you for sharing the coffee Ami!
you mentioned ‘fresher’ a few times.
did you see an old roast date or ?
something that tended to indicate an
expiration issue?
scenery looks interesting = >

get out your hiking boots kids.
No roast date, just the taste to it. It’s hard for me to describe other than that it tasted a little like it was missing some of it’s life.
That picture is great. I’d love to go there some time to check out the farm and hike.
