Taking a quick trip to the west coast today to try the California Blend from Newhall Coffee Roasting Company.

The last time I was actually in California, there were wildfires and I spent a lot of time stuck in traffic on the 101. Let’s just say this coffee smells one hundred times better than those not so pleasant memories I have of the state.

It had a winning aroma like the Los Angeles Lakers. It was warm and sweet. There was a combination melted chocolate, a little bit of nutty influence and a small dash of cinnamon.

The taste was darker than I expected. Two days in a row that I’ve had coffees where the scents threw me off to the actual taste. It was like I had been misled by GPS and ended up in the Sierra Mountains instead of Laguna beach. Both are great places to go, I just wasn’t prepared for the mountains.

The California Blend is a light to medium roast, but tasted like it had been roasted longer. The taste was more dark chocolate, still a bit of cinnamon, but now I was also picking up a drop or two of honey. It also had a slightly woody taste, like something cooked on top of cedar.

The taste left on my tongue was dry and almost dusty feeling.

Whether you like California or not, this is a coffee worth checking out. This coffee had a lot of twists and turns like a good Hollywood movie, but in the end it left me satisfied. It earned a slightly above average rating of 3.25 out of 5.

Overall, this is a great every day coffee especially since it comes only in two pound bags. It usually takes me about a week to go through a pound of coffee, so two would’ve been a little too much for me. However, since the two pound bag is currently just $14.99, the price of many one pound bags, there’s worse problems to have.

Buy the California Blend for $14.99.

  1. Nice review. I agree with your tasting notes for the most part, but after going through an entire 2lb bag of it, i’d probably give it a 4 out of 5. I suppose the darker taste didn’t surprise me since I never looked at what type of roast it was supposed to be to begin with. A while ago they had a coupon for $5 off their 2lb bag so i gave it a shot, and was pleased. I’d probably buy it again.

Maybe after a few more cups of it, I’ll give it a higher rating. I definitely liked it though.

I was a little confused about which roast it was supposed to be – the bag had one thing and the description online was slightly different.
