The tip that he shared was:

I do two things to improve the overall quality of the coffee that I brew at home. First, as this contest implies, is to use the freshest water available. (And it may just be superstition, or something similar to that, but I swear that using the COLDEST fresh water makes a difference, as well!) Second, though, is to grind the beans I’m going to use immediately prior to brewing them. Not the night before, not even a couple of hours before, but immediately prior to brewing. It may be slightly inconvenient, especially if you’re going to be making your coffee in the morning before going off to work, but if it’s at all possible, this is really a key component to making the best-tasting, highest quality coffee possible.

I’m also a fan of using very cold water when I brew my coffee. I read somewhere that it does make a difference, of course I’ve never been able to find that article again, but it does seem to make sense to my unscientifically trained mind. And of course I highly recommend, grinding your beans right before brewing your coffee. The taste difference is incredible.

I had a serious canned coffee habit, especially when I was working long hours on the front lines in the retail world. Looking back, most of them weren’t exactly great tasting and even fewer actually tasted like coffee. However, they kept me on my feet and running.

These days, my coffee standards are a little bit higher. In other words, I don’t really drink a lot of canned coffee unless it comes from an Asian store (if you haven’t tried Japanese canned coffee, you need to go out and try some now) or if it’s a really hot day, I’m on the road and there’s no coffee shop near by other than the local convenience store.

Then Seattle’s Best Coffee approached me to review their Iced Lattes In A Can. My expectations weren’t really high, but I accepted their offer to review their Iced Latte, Iced Vanilla Latte and Iced Mocha. Now, I’m glad that I did. They were far better than I imagined and now I’ve worked out a deal where one lucky Daily Shot Of Coffee reader will win three 4-packs of the canned lattes. The Drink: Iced Latte From Seattle’s Best Coffee
Type: Canned Coffee

The classically delicious combo of cold coffee, milk and sugar, now in an infinitely bring-alongable can.

From the second that I popped open the can, I was impressed. The Iced Latte smelled exactly like an iced latte – an espresso shot iced, foamed milk on top and a lot of sugar mixed in. I’ll admit that I was expecting something more chemical smelling like a lot of the other canned coffees that I’ve found at gas stations.

It didn’t taste chemical either. Each sip was filled with a sweet, creamy flavor. Not much espresso flavor on this one, maybe just a drop or two but it was high on the drinkable scale.

Of the three, the Iced Latte ended up being my least favorite. It wasn’t bad, but like I said, I would love more espresso flavor in it.

The Drink: Iced Vanilla Latte From Seattle’s Best Coffee
Type: Canned Coffee

Cool, creamy coffee mingles perfectly with delicious vanilla-ness. This is one vanilla that’s anything but.

The creamy vanilla aroma of this canned coffee reminded me a lot of a rich vanilla ice cream, with chunks of vanilla mixed into it. I couldn’t wait to taste it.

I detected a creamy, sweet vanilla taste up front and a mild coffee flavor in the background. It was a pleasant taste, but it did taste a bit water down.

Overall, the Iced Vanilla Latte wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. It was the average of these three.

The Drink: Iced Mocha From Seattle’s Best Coffee
Type: Canned Coffee

Chocolateness meets coffee meets milk in an ice cold fridge. Together they travel everywhere, satisfying everyone along the way. The end.

There was no missing the creamy, chocolate aroma on the Iced Mocha. It was delicious and I couldn’t wait to dive in and see what the taste was like.

It was creamy, filled with chocolate on the front and espresso flavor in the back. It was mostly sweet, with just a hit of the nutty bitterness of an espresso. And it wasn’t over the top either, it was smooth and subtle.

I liked the Iced Latte and Vanilla Iced Latte, but I loved the Iced Mocha. It wasn’t just drinkable, it was gulpable. This would be my first choice next time I’m on the road and am craving an iced coffee on the run. I’d say it’s the best iced coffee that I’ve had, along with a couple of Japanese canned coffees that I tried earlier this year.
