Up until recently I didn’t think it was possible to have too many coffee mugs. Now, I’ll admit that it is possible when you have coffee mugs taking up more space in your cabinets than the dishes. If you are one of those people trying to find the right place for all your coffee mugs I empathize. Aside from family heirlooms and some collectors’ items, I like to entertain and have more than a few I use for family gatherings and holidays. They won’t all fit in my standard kitchen cabinet and I don’t like to store them in the attic, basement, or other far off hard to reach place. There’s always the counter top upright coffee mug holder, which is practical, but when the mugs are not being used for extended periods of time they collect dust and I like keeping them clean in a cabinet with a door.

The problem is most installed kitchen cabinets, especially in galley kitchens , have 1) little shelf space and 2) a lot of ‘open air’ space. It may seem like a challenge trying to find a way to fill the latter but taking into consideration the strength of each shelf, the weight of the mugs in question, and that the average day to day coffee mug may be close to four inches tall and about three and a half inches wide, there are several options:

• Cup hooks: Kitchen cabinet shelves can usually be removed easily for cleaning or other purposes. Then cup hooks can be installed on the under belly of the shelf creating an entirely new way of storing your coffee mugs. Make sure to take the proper measurements leaving enough space between hooks for your mugs to breath and that the hooks don’t puncture the top side of the shelf when installed from below.
• Safety cup hooks: It’s always good to be extra careful with those sentimental mugs from your childhood or grandparents so use the safety cup hook whose latch closes around the mug handle. Anyone reaching into the cabinet for something on the shelf below and accidentally knocks the hanging mugs won’t cause them to fall, as they will be secure.
• Idle hanging racks: These are mounted on the underbelly of the shelf like the cup hooks and are kind of like drying racks but are enclosed on all sides for extra protection. The first house I lived already had them installed and they worked great. Made from different materials such as plastic or metal they are generally found in your local home improvement store though assembling them yourself out of wood isn’t difficult at all. All you’ll need is the proper measurements, a choice of wood, glue, and possibly a few screws for reinforcement.
• Sliding hanging racks: These are generally made of high quality plastic but use discretion as lesser quality ones are available. For the latter instillation is easy but they may not be a good fit for the ‘clankier’ heavier ones you.
• Make your own coffee mug cabinet: Finally, if you’re really pressed for space in the kitchen you don’t have to be too ambitious to actually do this. All you need is a tchotchke type of shelf, the kind that has lots of slots and comes in various sizes but whose slots are big enough for mugs. Some versions hang on the wall but since we’re dealing with weighty mugs I would recommend the standing model. There may even be room in each slot for a mug to sit on the shelf and another to hang from a cup hook. Regarding protection from dust, these tchotchke shelves don’t normally have doors like kitchen cabinets because they are for display purposes but a glass or wood door can be installed solving this problem.

These are just a few inexpensive ideas on how to better utilize your kitchen cabinets making them accessible for your army of coffee mugs and will hopefully keep them safe and clean. Just remember to always consider the weight of the mugs and stress on any shelf when storing, as you want your coffee mugs to stay in one piece so you can enjoy your favorite coffee any time of day.
