Coffee Grinders – 2009 Holiday Guide

by Mike on October 28, 2009 in Coffee Grinders

It’s that time of year again, holiday shopping! It’s almost hard to believe, it’s not even Halloween yet. I’m the kind of person that will wait to the last day that I can order it online, but I hear that some people like to start shopping earlier.

Each week, Daily Shot Of Coffee will feature a different coffee related product that would make a great gift this Christmas and Holiday season. This week it’s coffee grinders, one of the keys to getting better coffee.

Beginner Coffee Grinders:

I own both of these coffee grinders. They’re nothing special and there’s a lot better on the market, but they get the job done.

Mr. Coffee Electric Coffee Grinder with Chamber Maid Cleaning System

Mr. Coffee Electric Coffee Grinder with Chamber Maid Cleaning System

This is the low end coffee grinder that I recommend to my friends. Read the review.

  • Measures 4-1/2 by 4 by 8-inch; 1-year limited warranty.
  • Removable, dishwasher-safe grinding chamber; cord storage
  • Chamber maid cleaning system; bowl scraper disLodges coffee from grinding area
  • 3 Grind settings; wide upper collar; flip-top lid for mess-free filling and emptying
  • Electric coffee grinder grinds 4 to 12 cups for precision brewing

Buy it at Amazon for $19.96.

Bodum C-Mill Blade Coffee Grinder 1.6-oz.

Bodum C-Mill Blade Coffee Grinder 1.6-oz.

There are some nice features about the Bodum Grinder, but it’s not my favorite. Read the review.

The C-Mill electric coffee grinder has a very strong and precise motor. The coffee beans don’t get crushed but cut in record time – important so that the coffee taste is well preserved. The C-Mill grinds 1.6 oz of coffee at a time and comes with a two year limited warranty.

Community Coffee has it for the lowest price at $19.95.

Mid Level Coffee Grinders:

I’m debating both of these for my next coffee grinder. I’ve heard nothing but good things about both of them.

Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill

  • Measures 6-3/4 by 9-3/4 by 5 inches; 18-month warranty

Buy at Amazon for $49.95.

Krups GVX2-12 Burr Grinder

Krups GVX2-12 Burr Grinder

Advanced Coffee Grinders

These are the ones on my Christmas list this year.

Breville BCG450XL Conical Burr Grinder

Breville BCG450XL Conical Burr Grinder

  • Conical burr grinder with ultra-fine to coarse adjustable settings
  • Variable timer with 10 to 30 seconds of grind time
  • Removable bean hopper holds 1/2 pound of coffee beans
  • Stainless-steel/polymer base offers start and stop control, plus on/off switch
  • Measures 5-1/4 by 7 by 11-1/4 inches

Buy at Amazon for $98.99.

KitchenAid Pro Line Burr Coffee Grinder
KitchenAid Pro Line Burr Coffee Grinder

The commercial-quality burrs actually flake coffee instead of crushing it, so you don t lose any of the essential oils that give coffee its full flavor. Turning at just 450 RPMs, this burr grinder also ensures those oils will not burn off due to frictional heat. Special gears control the delivery of beans to the burrs for a better grind consistency, and a plastic seal helps position the coffee bin under the grinding spout to prevent grounds from escaping.

Buy it Amazon for $157.95.

Perfect timing Mike. I’m looking for a grinder myself. I got tired of the big bags of coffee at the store going stale on me three days in. I want that fresh taste. I am thinking about the Mr. Coffee one.

It’s obviously not the top of the line grinder, but getting the Mr. Coffee grinder really changed my whole coffee experience for the better.

Mike and all,
As I sit here reading the blog about “grinders” I think the New York Yankees need to start “grinding” the Phillies are on top as of the 8th inning thanks Utley NOT! Now back to the subject of “grinders” I’ve enjoyed my little Braun for years but now it’s time to buy a new one. Thanks Mike for your write up on the Mr. Coffee grinder. I thought I’d mention after you grind your coffee make sure your coffee maker is as clean as possible it really makes a difference. I’m not the first one to make the coffee in the morning so tonight I decided to have a cup while watching the series. I’m known as the sniffer LOL I’m so concerned with anything going bad souring etc. So after sniffing the water tank I realized it was stale smelling from being closed up. So tonight I experimented with 3 steps to see if it would freshen the coffeemaker. Here is what I did and it really made a difference. First I placed 1/3 cup of white vinegar in the carafe along with enough water to fill to the top. I ran this through the coffeemaker then did the same with 1 tablespoon of baking soda added to a full carafe of water and ran that through the last was clear full carafe of water. It really made the coffee taste great with a clean coffeemaker. Now back to the final innings and a second cup. Go Yanks!

The Yankees are killing me right now, that’s all I can say about that.

I agree, another key to great coffee is a clean coffee maker. I use vinegar and water to clean mine and the results have been good. I’ll have to try the baking soda. I’m now afraid to smell the water tank on my coffee maker.

Hi Mike,
Don’t be afraid nothing will come out and bite you! LOL The main reason I have a sniffing and eyeballing habit is that our city water department has additives in our tap water that cause rings to form in the toilet so I figured it was not good for the coffeemaker. You can delete this if you want but it’s something I’m concerned about. I don’t know if a majority of people use their tap water or if they use bottled. So many things to be concerned about these days and all this stress for a cup of coffee.

I use a water filter on my faucet, but it’s still not as pure as water I’ve had from other places I’ve lived. I think it also affects the way the coffee tastes, but the filtered water is a huge improvement over directly from the faucet coffee.

NOW look who is tempting who to shop like the devil! Thanks, Mike, now I’m oogling the “Advanced” grinders. LOL

But you know how I feel about my Krups Burr grinder (mid-level). It comes highly recommended.
