The Drink: Community Coffee House Blend
Type: Ground Blend
Overall Rating: 3.5 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs

If you’re looking for a mother’s day present for the coffee drinking mom, the Community Coffee House Blend is one option.

A couple of weeks ago, Community Coffee sent me a preview of their mother’s day gift basket, included in it was their House Blend. It’s a medium-dark blend of beans from Valle del Cauca, Colombia.

The aroma had me thinking “intriguing.” It was a nutty aroma, with a light layer of cinnamon and chocolate around the edges.

The dark roast taste came out on top, controlling the flavor. But it wasn’t over the top and definitely not over roasted. It was well balanced and exceptionally smooth with a medium body. The tail end of the coffee had an exclamation point with a darker-heavier feel.

The House Blend runs for a very affordable $7.99 for whole or ground 12 ounces. If you’re interested in the mother’s day gift set, it’s $44.95. The gift basket comes with the coffee and a French Press inside a handwoven basket.

I finished to giant mugs back to back without even thinking. It earns an above average 3.5 on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. It’s not what I’d call an exceptional or rare coffee, but it is a good all around coffee, which I think makes it a good mother’s day gift. Picking a coffee for someone is usually difficult, but this is a safe bet unless they like light roasts.

That’s awesome, I really enjoyed this coffee. My bag is almost empty, so I was kind of sad.

Not Bad :D So Tell Me This Ground Coffee Is It Ground For French Press Or Regular Drip? The Only Reason I Ask Is Because It’s Not A Normal/Common Practice For Big Companies To Custom Grind, Normally It Regular Drip, Fine, And some Even Have All Purpose Grind :P Guess U Should Do A Red French Press Giveaway, I’m Sure U Have 1 Too Many! ;) HaHa

BODY, not sure, I’ve never tried their pre-ground in a French Press (don’t currently have one at the mo’), but I do a use a French drip stovetop pot (you know, the old kind that has a the filter thingy on top, and you have to pour boiling water sloooooooooooowly over top of it LOL), and whatever grind they use (I’m assuming it’s for auto drip, but I could be wrong), works fine in THAT.

I’m Thinking U Have The Pour Over Drip Pot, If So I Love It! It Serves Multipurpose Grounds Thats One Of The Things I Love About It, I Have Various Techniques I Use For That, Makes For An Excellent Cup! *Cheers |_|B

This was ground for a drip coffee maker. I have seen the ground for espresso and ground for french press, but I’ve never tried it. I’d rather grind it myself for both, just to get the freshness and so that I can grind it exactly the way that I want.

Am I weird for trying not to buy whole beans instead of ground coffee at the grocery store? The connoisseurs sneer at grocery-store coffee, and gag at pre-ground coffee; yet a good fresh-ground round of Eight O’ Clock or Community is might fine for me. (I used to get Folgers by the four-pounds full, ground; but either they or I have changed in the last year and a half, because both their fancier whole bean selection and standard medium grind tastes burned to me now.)

But it’s frustrating to find few whole-bean options that aren’t quite as blackened as my soul and are also under $8 for a 12-oz bag (I’d prefer $3/lb). So, is pre-ground stuff good enough, or should I keep on grinding?

Well, I wouldn’t necessarily call you weird, but I have yet to meet a coffee lover who DOESN’T prefer the taste of fresh ground to packaged preground. I feel your price pain, I love me some GOOD coffee but I don’t always have the money for the more expensive stuff that I like, so I tend to stick with Community Coffee (I have to order it online as I am a Yank) or I get stuff from good local coffee houses, and grind myself at home (I think 7-8 bucks is pretty reasonable for good quality coffee that I drink on a regular basis. I don’t trust any coffee much below that price point). I do keep one or two preground bags around usually though, for times that I just don’t have those extra couple minutes to fool with grinding. I love CC’s New Orleans Blend, and that only comes preground because it’s blended with the chicory, and I’m okay with that – I just keep it tightly air-sealed once open.

I’d second what Devon said for the most part. Your definitely not weird, however it’s hard to find good coffee at low prices for many reasons. There’s a lot of people between where the coffee is ground and when we drink it, with a lot of them getting paid far to little.

I keep forgetting I need to try their House blend! Geez. It’s going on the shopping list. Glad to hear you liked it! Too bad they didn’t send you the whole bean variety to try ;) Although, I find their pre-ground not bad in regards to freshness compared to other pre-grounds that taste more stale, but I do try to use it up fairly quickly.

I’ve been finishing up a bag of their Between Roast that’s preground – which is actually really good, although I’ve taken more time finishing it than I normally allow, and I can taste the flavor deterioriation pretty markedly now in regards to it being stale. I hate to waste though in these economic times, so I just make it stronger to try to mask it a little LOL. But those first few brews were mighty tasty!

I’ve been slowly trying all of their offerings, even the preground, though I much prefer the bean. I do, though always have to keep a bag of New Orleans Blend on hand, love that chicory blend!

I’ve never seen their Between Roast before, that’s another one that I’ll have to add to the list to try.

I’ve tried a lot of their coffees, but I swear every time I look at their website, I find another one that I want to try.

Community Coffee is a reliable coffee source. I have their coffee shipped to me and have not had a bad cup. They offer a wide range of blends, as well as country-specific coffees.

Mike April 11, 2010 at 10:16 am

I agree, Community Coffee is one of the best all around coffee producers.
