Craft Coffee: Making Mailboxes A Lot More Attractive
Even when I get bills in the mail, I’m still happy to see a box from Craft Coffee. This time Craft Coffee sent me bags of coffee from Four Barrel Coffee, Paradise Coffee Roasters and Dallis Bros. Coffee.
Check out my review of June’s Craft Coffee sampler for more how Craft Coffee works, but the short version is that each month Craft Coffee picks three coffees from premium roasters across the country and sends sample size bags of coffee to your mailbox. You get a new coffee to try, the roasters get some more exposure and it’s win/win for everyone.
Because I’m a little bit behind on my coffee reviews right now, I’m reviewing Craft Coffee’s July box of goodies. Luckily, I had time to sample and taste the coffees much earlier this month.
The Drink: Colombian By Four Barrel Coffee
Type: Single Origin Whole Bean
Overall Rating: 4 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs
The first coffee that I tried from this month’s shipment was from legendary Four Barrel Coffee. Over the past few years, I’ve heard a lot of amazing about this San Francisco coffee roaster, unfortunately since they were on the opposite coast, I never had the chance to try any of their coffee…until now.
The aroma got my attention with fruity scent full of peaches and a little bit of orange flavor. There was also a unique fermented smell that was wine like. I don’t know if it’s because the beans where wet processed (using water to remove the outer cherry-like layers of the coffee beans) or what, but I enjoyed it.
The taste was led off by a citrus flavor, followed by a wave of wine and hints of graham crackers. The after taste was filled with a tart grapefruit flavor, but overall the sip was exceptionally smooth.
Overall, this Four Barrel Coffee earned a four on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. It was a unique tasting coffee loaded with flavor that I would love to try again.
The Drink: Sumatra From Paradise Coffee Roasters
Type: Single Origin Whole Bean
Overall Rating: 4.25 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs
I think it was two years ago that I tried my first coffee from Paradise Coffee Roasters. It was so delicious that my mouth started watering just thinking about it. I couldn’t wait to dig into their version of the Sumatra.
This coffee had a vegetable aroma and while you may think that isn’t such a good thing, you have to try it for yourself. This coffee smelled like fried tomatoes, a mix of other vegetables, and it made mouth start to water, just like the first coffee I tried from this roaster.
The taste started off with a little bit of sweet pea flavor. Again, not your average coffee flavor, but trust me it’s a good thing. The vegetable flavor was followed by sweet, nutty flavor and a hint of charcoal.
It earned a 4.25, proving that not all Sumatra’s have to be dark roasted to taste exceptional.
The Drink: Kenyan From Dallis Bros. Coffee
Type: Single Origin Whole Bean
Overall Rating: 4 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs
Next up was a micro-batch coffee from Kenya. I’ve had some amazing coffees from that part of Africa, so I was hoping that this one would a lot like the previous ones I’ve tasted.
It started off with a floral aroma, with large helpings of chocolate and sweetness. I had a feeling that this was a Mike kind of coffee.
It had a dark chocolate taste with a little bit of lemon on the side. It didn’t have layers and layers of flavors like the other two coffees, but it was still a delicious taste.
Overall, this coffee earned a well above average rating of four.
And overall, if you like trying new coffees from the best coffee roasters in the country and if you haven’t tried a box of coffee from Craft Coffee, it’s safe to say that you’re missing out.

while i’m not so much about coffee that tastes like
tomatos and peas Mike… the others sound very interesting.
would you recall what size the samples are?
i’m a fan of small samples at first.
maybe they have a mini-Mike plan?
I’m horrible at describing some of the more unusual flavors like tomatoes and peas. I think if it was loaded with those flavors like a flavored coffee it wouldn’t be such a good thing, but with just hints of each, I think it adds to the complete flavor.
The sample sizes are 4 ounces each and there’s three bags in each box.
No mini-MIke plan yet, but they should!
