Cusinart 12 Cup Grind & Brew Coffeemaker Preview

by Mike on January 22, 2010 in Coffee Equipment Reviews,Coffee Makers

For Christmas, my close friend and blogging conspirator Jen from Stiletto Sports gave me the Cusinart 12 Cup Grind & Brew Coffeemaker (model DGB-550BK). However with the Zojirushi Fresh Brew Coffeemaker in the Daily Shot Of Coffee Review kitchen, I wasn’t able to focus on the Cuisinart Coffeemaker and give it a thorough testing until now.

A nice addition to any modern kitchen, this 12-cup automatic coffeemaker automatically grinds whole beans right before brewing to produce a fresh and flavorful pot of coffee. The 24-hour fully programmable unit allows for “wake-up” coffee, plus its brew-pause function makes it simple to enjoy a cup of coffee before the end of the brewing cycle. The included 60-ounce stainless carafe offers an ergonomic handle, knuckle guard, and dripless pour spout for graceful serving. Other highlights include adjustable auto shutoff for up to four hours, a grind-off option, a charcoal water filter to remove impurities, and a separate grinder chamber and filter area to ensure simple cleanup. Housed in elegant Italian styling, the coffeemaker measures approximately 12 by 10 by 17 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

-Amazon description

I’ll be testing all of the features, starting with the dripless spout. I’m known for making a mess when I’m pouring coffee, so I can’t wait to try this out.

I’ll also be looking at the brew and pause feature. I didn’t read anything about this model, but I’ve heard that brew and pause can cause problems in general.

This coffee maker also has a 1-4 cup setting for when you don’t want to have a full pot of coffee. I know crazy idea, but I’ll be investigating how it compares to when I make a full put of coffee.

I’ve read complaints online that this coffee maker requires more work to operate and clean. People say that it can be messy. And I’ve read complaints from customers that said it doesn’t make strong enough coffee because it doesn’t hold enough beans in the grinder basket. I’ll be paying special attention to all those areas.

And of course, I’ll be looking at the two most important things, how easy is it to use and how does the coffee taste!

The review process should be complete some time next week.

Have you tried any of the Cuisinart Grind & Brew coffeemakers? What did you think of them?

Disclosure: FTC don’t worry, I bought Jen Daughtry tickets for her birthday last year, so we’re pretty even. And while she can be very opinionated, all opinions in in the forthcoming review will be mine.

For The Record As Said B4 Once This Baby Starts Collecting Dust Be Sure To Send It Up To Me To Go Into My Testing LAB, It Will Make A Nice Addition To My Toys For My Coffee Museum :P . I’m Not Familiar With This Particular Module, But I Will Say That I Have A Cooks Essential Model About 6yrs Old. It Grinds The Coffee Fresh As Well, You Can Even Control The Grind, For A Stronger Coffee. The Machine Has A Metal Filter. Makes Great Coffee! The Only Thing Is The Cleanup, You Can’t Just Take The Filer Out And Put It In Ur Compost Bin. You Have To Dump The Grounds, And Then Clean It Right Away, Forbid You Have Multiple Brewers And Allow The Grounds To Age In Ur Filter. I Look Forward To Hearing The Pros N Cons. My Thing Is Companies Need To Start Selling REAL Machines, Any Stop Selling Hype. Hope The Machine Holds Up To Ur Expectations.

This one is a keeper, but I have a feeling that I’m going to be giving away another coffee maker very shortly.

Would also be interested in how loud the grinding process is. If it is loud wouldn’t be able to use in the AM for fear of waking up hubby who does not drink coffee, so he would not even appreciate a flavorful pot!!

I’ll look into how loud it is, maybe compare it to a regular coffee grinder and see if I can hear it behind closed doors, etc.

I got a grind and brew for xmas from my boyfriend and I LOVE it :) I’ve been brewing at home more than buying out too. I’m now wanting my own personal coffee maker for the office ;) The coffee maker contest your having is a great chance for that to happen *wink*

did i miss it or did you mention if the included carafe
is insulated? i’ve used both glass and metal
and insulated ones are the only way to go if you
make more than a single cup.

our office has a Cuisinart 10 cup brewer
with a double wall carafe and it can hold
a hot coffee for many hours.

i find it very impressive.

I have the glass one, but just about every morning around ten, I wish I had the metal carafe.
