I love the idea of the diner much more than I typically love the diner experience. When I visit the dream diner in my mind, the food is fresh and simple—, your cheeseburger cooked to perfection, the tomato plump and ripe, the lettuce crisp. In this dream diner, I would be served a cup of Ethical Bean Coffee’s Classic coffee. It would add to the slightly cake-like taste of the pancakes and it would chase down a strip of smoky bacon.
All Ethical Bean Coffee bags carry a QR code that, when scanned on your smart phone, tells the story of that particular coffee: when it was roasted, where it’s from, who roasted it, and the company’s notes on cupping the coffee. I was skeptical of the QR code but the app turned out to be interesting and informative. Every bit of information is given a context and aims to educate you on how Ethical Bean defines its descriptions and clarifies terminology.
When I opened the bag, the beans gave off a nice even toned aroma that was fragrant with a hint of spice. Once ground, a subtle sweet smell came out as well that was like opening a bar of milk chocolate. I brewed the Classic in my french press and the velvety smooth aromas in the cup invitingly drew me closer.
This coffee has a nice feel in the mouth, bold and full. It is far from flat, although there are no shocks of flavor. It makes a lively curve as it passes over your tongue, with a nice combination of sweet and sour and then peaks with a touch of brightness.
Ethical Bean’s Classic was a wonderful experience of enjoyable characteristics. All had a presence but none of them screamed. It was what I would expect from a coffee called Classic, in all the best ways. It is not a coffee for the masses, but for those that go out of their way to seek something a little better than average. This is a coffee to come back to and one to trust your morning to—even an all important weekend morning.
I will definitely be serving this coffee in my dream diner. Daily Shot of Coffee readers will be the first to hear when it is open for business. Ethical Bean Coffee’s Classic earned a solid 3.5 out of 5 on the Daily Shot of Coffee scale.
You can order Classic online from Ethical Bean Coffee’s website for $11.99 for a 12 oz. bag.

ok i’m not able to detect sweet and sour in a cup of coffee… maybe sour in a spoiled bean brew… but not sweet and sour.
heck Geoff… most Chinese drink tea.
i like the idea of this coffee a lot.
thanks!
Thanks a lot Howard. With the sour, I was noticing something on the tart side of sour, like granny smith apples. Probably should have just went with tart. It’s sometimes hard to not over complicate things when choosing the right word.
