all this work to enjoy coffee Mike…you have
a great Labor Day holiday yourself.
in regards to the coffee beetle article , isn’t one of the
benefits of organic shade grown coffee a better
balance between the natural forces?
in specific… the bird and wildlife balance ought
to be able to predate the beetles in some measure.
maybe the coffee growers they are most destructive
to are the ones where these balances don’t exist?
that would be interesting to study a bit more.
also, i know tropical growers who regularly
run their chickens in the groves to keep pests
under control.
again, the article wasn’t specific on what type
of coffee culture they were referring to from what
i could read but i didn’t detect a strong bias to
organic agriculture.
it’s sort of like bees in this part of the USA>
commercial bee keepers are concerned with
hive losses but my garden is filled with
wild bees which means to me the problem
is more isolated to the commercial hives
and the medications and chemicals used
on them… not a widely spread event.
You have a great Labor Day too!
I think you’re right on about the need for a balance. However, I wonder if creating a balance is something the farmers can afford to really do. Good question and now you have me thinking.
Mike thanks for the round up. I clicked through the link on the problem with recycling coffee cups. I read through the podcast, and listened to most of it too. I completely agree that paper coffee cups create a unique horrible challenge to deal with and that each year the coffee industry puts BILLIONS of cups into landfills. Even worse, though the podcast guest talked about a “waxy coating” on cups, making them non recyclable, the Starbucks cups have a micro-thin interior plastic lining for added strength also making them non-recyclable. However a few cities recycle everything – Right here in Seattle, the Starbucks cup IS considered recyclable yet once you leave Seattle, it is not!
Anyways, thanks for the links. I’m looking forward to seeing someone’s review of the coffee-beef-stew!
Mike enjoy your labor day weekend and coffee … in your own personal cup!
Melody
Hopefully more plants will be able to recycle things like coffee cups that have more than just paper materials in them. That seems to be the problems a lot of places outside of Seattle. It’s understandable, but it doesn’t slow the fact that the landfills are filling up.
I love coffee and I love wine. What could be better than coffee flavored wine? =)
I’ll second that!
