Every week, I try to do a round up of my favorite coffee related blog posts that I’ve read in the past seven days or so. This week’s round up of the coffee blogosphere includes some sad news, good news and a whole lot of funny in between. Enjoy!
Sprudge: Study Finds Nicaragua Fair Trade Farmers End Up Poorer
Over at Sprudge, they shared this article that doesn’t really surprise me after reading Brewing Justice: Fair Trade Coffee, Sustainability, and Survival. The fair trade system has a lot of problems, this is probably the biggest.
Espresso News And Reviews: Cowboy coffee? How passé. Try Afghanistan insurgent coffee and lawnmower coffee.
On a slightly more lighter note, The Shot found two fun filled videos on other ways to make coffee, emphasis on other ways.
Pure Coffee: Product Review: Espro Press
Bill reviews the Espro Press, an alternative to the glass french press. I’ve had an eye on these for a while, so it’s great to get a review.
The Coffee Adventures: Cooking With Coffee: Burgers
In her latest installment of cooking with coffee, Jamie hits upon one of my favorite subjects – hamburgers! Looks mouth watering and I think I’ll have to try it very soon!

I loved Jamies post on the coffee burgers… Have to get my hands on some of that Applewood rub! If you get the chance Mike, you HAVE to try making the Chili recipe I added in reply to her post – it honestly is the best chili you will ever eat! (in my humble opinion)
Yup, that sounds exactly like my kind recipe…Coffee, plus beer…chili, win!
Every time a new study comes out, people who are uninformed on the complexities of the issue, in this case fair trade coffee, just jump on the bandwagon of whatever the new study concludes without further research. I hope this isn’t the case with this study. I have been drinking fair trade for a few years now and plan to continue because, unless I read more, my research has told me that fair trade workers do have better working conditions. People just have to learn to buy fair trade as much as possible, so that the farmers can earn more money and this study can be proven false.
I think it goes beyond just the study. The study just happened to be what made the news across the country this week. I read Brewing Justice, as well as related articles that point to this being a problem with Fair Trade and similar certifications. It’s not enough to make me stop drinking Fair Trade, but I don think something has to be done to improve the process.

they need an OPEC of coffee.
charge what it costs and add a markup dudes.
My concern is that consumers would buy less fair trade. I wouldn’t stop and I’m sure others wouldn’t, but they do have to compete.
Thanks for the round up. I don’t function properly without a good cup of coffee first thing in the morning!
