Fresh Brews: Healthy Coffee Scams, Iced Coffee Experiments And More

Fresh Brews is the (semi-) weekly round up everything going on in the coffee blogosphere. I never know what I’m going to find as I’m reading through out the week and I share some of my favorite stories with you. Enjoy!

The Coffee Adventures: Brewed Over Ice: Does Iced Coffee Taste The Same As Hot?
I don’t know where you are, but it’s pretty hot here in Florida and I’ve heard that parts of the country are even hotter. Luckily, we have Jamie who is helping us out with some experiments in iced coffee.

Coffee Nate: Healthy Coffee Scam!
Nate is back with a fun video about the so-called healthy coffees. I think Nate and I feel exactly the same about them!

Cheap Flights: A Viennese Coffee Crawl
Cheap Flights isn’t exactly the first site that I think of when I think coffee, however apparently they know a thing or two about coffee in Vienna. I would love to take a vacation there and spend some quality time getting to know the Melange, Fiaker and a few of the other drinks.

Caffination: CaffiNation 494: Heater
Make sure you check out the latest podcast over at Caffination. For the coffee geeks, there’s a few stories about coffee (including one from some site called Daily Shot Of Coffee), however my favorite article this week was on the technology side. Listen to the story “A bright idea to bring light into poor family homes.”

i haven’t found that iced coffee tastes the same as hot coffee.
it’s, to me, a totally new wild world.
appropriate for the Summer, don’t you guys agree?
tastes are suppressed with ice and other flavors
tend to bubble up from beneath the frozen water cubes.

my chief girl says a cold coffee wakes her up
even more than a hot one. she favors iced as
a first thing in the morning drink.

    • Mike says:

I think the flavors of cold coffee is different, but there are beans that I think come out great. However, I don’t think all beans turn out great with iced coffee. In iced coffee, a lot of beans lose their flavor, but lighter roasted, brighter coffees seems to come out really great for me in cold or iced coffee.

ok ok Mike distracted me with the redirect to
    Caffination…. where i totally agree!

goes a LOT better with a good strong coffee to partner up.

    thanks Mike!

  3. Tara says:

Mike — do you have a favorite(s) bean for iced? It’s all I’m craving these days… (and I agree, they’re certainly not all equal)

    • Mike says:

I like anything that’s a light roast, has citrus or fruit flavors. My favorites that I’ve tried so far have come from Guatemala or Mexico. Those seem to translate the best into iced coffee.

      • howard says:

i have had good taste results from Mexican organic beans from
Starbucks Tara… Mike ‘owns’ that entire subject.

        • Mike says:

That is probably my favorite coffee from Starbucks, I haven’t it tried it yet with cold or iced coffee, but I bet it would be one of the better tasting ones.

  4. Connie says:

I love iced coffee..my favorite at Starbucks is Iced Vanilla Latte, but at home it is fine to have just coffee, milk and sugar over ice. I just found out recently from my mom that her mom also enjoyed iced coffee and most of her life was lived prior to Starbucks!
