Fresh Brews: Jesus In A Coffee Cup, Extinct Coffee Makers & More

Man finds Jesus in coffee stain
I couldn’t make this up if I wanted to. I think he might have had too much coffee that day, but who knows, even after searching, I couldn’t find a picture.

Dunkin’ Brands opens 15,000th store
Last week, Dunkin Donuts opened up their 15,000th store. I’d like to think that they couldn’t have done it without me going back and buying a coffee coolatta. In case you were curious, they have 6,300 stores in the US and 8,800 internationally. That is a lot of coffee and donuts.

Starbucks to grind and brew coffee more frequently
Starbucks announced that they’re going to be brewing their coffee more often – every 24 minutes instead of thirty. I don’t drink their coffee that much, but I never had a cup that was overheated or stale. Maybe that’s just me? Anyone that drinks their coffee more often, think this will make a difference and help them compete with lower cost coffee from the fast food places?

Starbucks Coffee Grinder Recall: Blade Grinders Pose Risk of Lacerations
In less positive news for Starbucks, they had to recall more than half a million of their coffee grinders because they wouldn’t turn off or they would turn on unexpectedly.

Clover coffee machines become an endangered species
Just when I find out what a Clover coffee machine is and why it’s such a good thing, they’re going to start being more rare. Starbucks bought the company that makes them and suddenly a lot of the coffee shops that used them are looking for other ways to make that perfect cup.

Speculators jack up price of coffee beans
In case you were curious about why you’re paying more for coffee, here’s another reason. Throw this in with poor growing conditions in key coffee growing regions and it looks like coffee prices won’t be going down anytime soon.

7-Eleven, McDonald’s, Starbucks warm up to iced coffee
With all the chains pushing iced coffee this summer, it looks like the drink is going to this summers hottest (their pun, not mine) drink. I always thought it was a must have for the summer months, I’m surprised that iced tea was still more popular.

Cold coffee drinks for simmering summer days
Three recipes if you were looking for a way to cool down today. It’s supposed to feel like 105 degrees today, so all three of those sound good to me.

I searched for the coffee stain picture when the story broke as well, but the only thing I could find was:

Hmmm, I was expecting something like the stain on the bottom of the coffee cup, like you see in a white cup after all the coffee is gone.

I found a larger photo of the Jesus stain.

Yeah, I just don’t see it. Definitely a unique stain, but that’s about all I can see.

The CLOVER article doesn’t mention that Vancouver is also a city that still has the machine. I saw 3 during my May trip. There are still 3 (non *$) ones left in Seattle.

It sounds like my chances of ever seeing one in person are slim to none.

“slim to none” –> only in independent coffee shops.

Your chances should increase as *$ starts deploying more of the machines nationally. I’ve had a *$ brewed Clover. It is pretty decent, but no where near as good as 49th Parallel or Inteligentsia.

I’m definitely going to keep an eye out, since I know what I’m looking for. From what I’ve heard, I wish that I had a 49th Parallel or Inteligentsia near me for many reasons.

It’s reassuring that Starbucks is departing from the debate about price to focus on its most discriminating attribute: the in-store experience. Sure, frequent grinding means more fabulous coffee scent. It also imbues the drink with good, old-fashioned attributes such as work, care, freshness, discernment, etc.

In the current coffee war, all of this says “worth the cost” to me far more than any Starbucks advertisement that debates McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts about price.

Thanks for this monomaniacal coffee blog, by the way. Two thumbs up.
