Fresh Brews: Starbucks More Fair Trade Than Fair Trade, Overdosing On Coffee & More

It’s been another wild week in the coffee world with everything from the sad – death by over caffeination to the weird – a book called Coffee by Marc Fiszman to the thoughtful – Jimseven experimenting with the French Press. Here’s my weekly attempt to wrap it all up in one place.

Weekly Roast Coffee and Caffeine, Which Brewing Method Has the Most?
Without peeking, what brewing method do you think produces the most caffeine?

Dear Coffee I Love You The Aeropress
The Aeropress doesn’t look like it should make coffee, but I’m not the only one who thinks this strange device makes some amazing coffee.

Jimseven Cupping Vs French Press
James Hoffman argues that maybe the standard operating procedure for brewing coffee in a French Press is too short. With my next batch of coffee, I’d be willing to test the results of letting it brew for longer than the usual four minutes. What do you think?

Dear Coffee, I Love You How coffee is made*
Bonus from DCILY this week! BWJ found this awesome design that takes us from the ship that imported our coffee beans to the truck that delivers our coffee.

Coffee Book

Coffee
Coffee is a graphic novel by an author named Marc Fiszman. Coffee tells the rather strange, NSFW story of a hardcore marketing guru who uses his daily dose of the black stuff to attain spiritual enlightenment. I don’t know how to describe it. One review site, Shelf Abuse said that “fans of William S. Burroughs and Hunter S. Thompson will love Coffee’s disjointed narrative, inspired philosophies and sinister, disembodied entities”. I can’t disagree.

Coffee News

Fairtrade is accused of doing less for coffee farmers than Starbucks
Apparently Starbucks, the massive chain of coffee shops is doing more for fair trade than the Fairtrade Foundation, the group in charge of Fair Trade certification in Great Britain. Something isn’t right with this math.

Coffee Drinkers Beware: Man Dies of Caffeine Overdose
The sad news is that a young British man died after the eating spoonfuls of caffeine. The good news is that coffee won’t kill you unless drink 70 Red Bulls worth of coffee in one sitting.

American Airlines begins to offer Java City coffee inflight
The real headline should be that American Airlines is now offering coffee grown on sustainably managed farms and is Rainforest Alliance Certified. The only thing better than that would be if they stopped charing so much for their luggage and offered more leg room.

Special Report: Frappuccino flippers?
What attracts many people to Starbucks is the experience, however many employees are complaining that it’s becoming more like a McDonald’s. I always saw Starbucks as the McDonald’s of coffee chains and to tell the truth I haven’t seen much of a difference with in-store experience.

    Mike;
IF and only IF you brew your coffee in an insulated French Press,
i see no issues with the extended brew cycle.
but many regular ones will lose enough heat through the walls to
    affect my enjoyment i’ve found.

the experience? are these people very needy or what?
    we’re talking coffee Mike.
if the coffee is exceptional, i will endure a heck of a lot to
enjoy it. if the EXPERIENCE gives me goosebumps and
the coffee is “spit it out quality”, i’d rather forgo the
    experience…

my local SBs ( 2 of them close by) seem to have a
pretty good experience and if i choose carefully,
pretty decent coffee. i do wish the policy from corporate
was for every branch to offer at least 1 fair trade organic
coffee every day…but that’s pushy of me.

By experience for me – I want a friendly Barista that knows what they’re doing. It’s been hit or miss for me at Starbucks over the past few years.

      I’d second that corporate policy!

    i wonder where that came from… :)
the graphic was fun, if a bit simplistic.
