I hope everyone had a nice, long relaxing weekend full of delicious coffee. I know I did! However, while I was relaxing on the couch and watching way too many football games, there was lots of activity in coffee land.

Grande idea to make coffee ordering easier
Some people with too much free time, I mean a group called The Plain English Campaign want coffee shops to stop using names like venti and regular for the sizes of their drinks. Instead they want small, medium and large. Half of me thinks that these people just have too much free time. However, I’m sure it would help thousands of people because the names of everything can be confusing to someone walking into a coffee shop for the first time. That kind of makes it group of cool kids that knows how to order. Anyways, what’s your opinion?

An environmental quandary percolates at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters
Green Mountain Coffee has been known for their fair trade and environmentally friendly coffees. However, a few years ago they bought Keurig, the company that makes single serve coffee machines that can be extremely wasteful. There are special reusable k-cups, but for the most part the capsules are thrown out after being used. They’re looking at using containers that are recyclable and paper containers for tea. But is that enough for a company that prides itself on corporate responsibility?

Coffee Has More Perks Than You Think
Keeping up with all of the scientific studies and medical research about coffee could be a full time job. This short article rounds up some of the most recent positive discoveries about our favorite drug.

Man throws coffee at judge in Lafayette
Coffee abuse continues to be a problem. In two separate incidents, coffee was used as a weapon. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, but the coffee wasn’t so fortunate. Hopefully it was some bad tasting coffee, I’d hate to see some quality coffee wasted for such a useless reason.

Any coffee review that can work in Honey Nut Cheerios is worth mentioning. But really it points out that coffee reviews don’t all have to be words like complex and snappy, it can be real words that people can actually relate to.

Maybe it would be easier if all sizes were small, medium, and large. However, it was pretty funny to watch my ten year-old bounce up to the counter and order a “Non-fat grande chai tea latte with whip at 160, please.”

I mean, come on, that’s just CUTE!

Ok, I’m really really impressed if he can give that order. I can’t even do that sometimes!

That MSN article just barely touched on a few. Some others are pain reduction during and post exercise, improved endurance-exercise performance, reduction in exercise-induced asthma symptoms, and it may prevent gout. Just to add a few from a growing list.
I went to the Plain English Campaign website. Wow, it’s quite larger and more organized than I would have guessed.

You’re definitely right about that. My asthma is actually the reason I started drinking coffee.

I’m going to have to check out the website. I kind of imagined a bunch of college students with too much free time.

Who is defining ‘Plain English’ anyway? I like Venti and Grande even if I say them funny and sound like an uber-geek. I still get my coffee and in the correct size no less. But I digress.

I heard once [a few years back] that coffee is like beer in that it helps retain belly fat. I switched to tea for quite some time, but always seem to come back to coffee. Not sure if it made any difference.

Now to check out some of the perks of coffee and how to use these to my best advantage.

I’m right there with the plain english. Sometimes jargon in general can annoy me, but it’s definitely not going away and there are bigger things to worry about.

I think that drinking just black coffee can actually help people lose weight. I know it helped me when I switched to just black coffee. However, when we put in all of the good stuff that goes into a latte, all bets are off.

Anne January 5, 2010 at 10:41 am

Ah, so that’s my problem. I love my lattes. When I drink tea I put in a dab of honey or nothing at all, which would explain any weight loss gained [hmmm, that made more sense in my head].

The scary part might be that what you said made sense to me.

I agree with the sentiment that the Plain English Campaign folks have too much time on their hands. Couldn’t they just not go to Starbucks? Even if you go to Starbucks and order a small coffee instead of a tall the barista would know what you mean.

It makes me wonder if they have a problem with the word latte or americano. Should those terms be “plain english” too?

I read the article and they also have a problem with the word “regular” I kind of agree that regular is confusing though.

I worked at several cafes and bakeries in New York and I had to learn that to a lot of New Yorkers “regular” means milk and sugar. Being from California I never thought of what a regular coffee might be, I thought it meant black. Not wanting to assume anything I always asked for clarification from the customer.
