The Drink: GanoCafe Tongkat Ali
Type: Healthy Instant Coffee
Overall Rating: Three Out Of Five Coffee Cups
I’ve heard a lot about GanoCafe online, but today I’m dipping my toes into the water and trying the Ganocafe Tongkat Ali for myself.
I’ve tried a few healthy coffees now. The most recent was the POMx, which was coffee combined with pomgranite extract. I thought they were delicious overall and great for people that normally drink energy drinks, but want something that’s less like soda and more like coffee.
The Ganocafe is targeted at a different audience. It’s coffee mixed with Ganoderma Lucidu (a red Mushroom). The coffee is designed to have lower acid levels, less caffeine and the Ganoderma mushroom extract has been used medicinally in Asia for thousands of years. This particular flavor has ginseng added, which is said to help everything from digestion to fighting fatigue.
I play a doctor on television, but I’m not qualified to tell you whether or not it’s actually healthy. I’ll tell you that I could tell that it didn’t cause any acid problems in me, but at the same time it didn’t want to make me take a nap either, which is the way I usually feel when drinking decaf coffee. As far as the effects of the ginseng, I’d probably have to drink the coffee on a regular basis to give my opinion on it.
I can give you my opinion on what I thought of it as coffee. I’m not going to compare it to whole bean coffee from specialty roasters, but I will compare it to other instants as we as other healthy coffees.
Initially, I was skeptical because I’ve come across a lot of sites with a lot of hype about GanoCafe. One thing that convinced me to actually try it was that Healthy Coffee 411, the shop that provided me with the samples was not focused on the hype. They’re taking a much more human approach to marketing the coffee.
When I opened up the sample bag, my nose was greeted with an herbal smell, mixed with a coffee aroma. It was more along the lines of what I’d expect from a tea, it was nothing bad and definitely not going to stop me from trying it out.
The herbal aroma diminished after I heated the coffee up, but it still had a unique herbal aroma like I’ve never smelled before with coffee. Still not a bad thing and I couldn’t wait to see how it tasted.
The taste was very sweet mixed with a coffee taste. I was picking up hints of chocolate and a slight medicine like taste. However, I’d put that down as the ginseng and Ganoderma than anything else. Overall, the taste was almost tea like.
Once the cup cooled down some and the flavors had a chance to blend together, I found myself enjoying the taste.
The only thing that I didn’t like about it was the after taste that stayed in my mouth for a while after I finished my cup. It wasn’t horrible, just not what I wanted to be tasting an hour later.
As far as a healthy or instant coffee, I’d give this an average three out of five rating. I’ve had better and I’ve had a lot worse.
I know that coffee purists are going to hate it, but I’d suggest that anyone looking for a coffee with a healthy kick to check it out.
I have three other gano coffees to try, I’m curious how they’ll taste compared to this one.

Disclaimer: Healthy Coffee 411 sent me samples of the Ganocafe for review purposes. The only thing that I promised them was to give them a fair review and my opinion on the coffees.
Have you tried the Ganocafe? What did you think?

wow..that sounds interesting. If I ever am going to attempt replacing coffee (god forbid) I would use this as a substitute. Speaking of healthy coffees, have you heard about the Asian coffee with the collagen supplement added?

I have heard of that coffee with the collagen supplement. I think my exact words were “How are they going to top that!”
Hi Mike,
I’ve tried samples of the whole Gano line of coffees and tea (courtesy of Shae Bynes).
My favorite is the Ganocafe Classic. The Mocha was also delish, but I’m trying to cut back on sugar so I won’t be able to drink it every day, unfortunately..

The Mocha is the one that I think I’ll love after hearing Shae’s description of it. However, most of the time I do drink my coffee black so I’m looking forward to trying the Classic.
Thanks for stopping by over here.
Thank you, Steph for your comments. Glad you’re enjoying our Ganocafe Classic!
