Going Green With Coffee From Flavia

flavia-single-serve-coffee-machineWhen I think Single Serve Coffee Machines, I don’t exactly think green, especially when it comes to major international companies. It’s no secret that many major companies are only looking to improve their bottom line, but there’s companies like Flavia, a manufacturer of single serve coffee machines and coffee, that are taking a leading role in being more environmentally responsible.

Flavia is part of Mars, the company that makes candies like Skittles, Snickers, other foods and even pet supplies. It’s the kind of major international company that you could expect to not care about things like rain forest certification and using recycled materials, however, they’re setting an example that hopefully other corporations will follow.

Three of their most popular single serve coffee flavors, their House Blend, Breakfast Blend and Kona Blend certified by the Rain Forest Alliance.

“Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee is grown on farms where forests are protected, rivers, soils and wildlife are conserved and workers are treated with respect, paid decent wages, properly equipped and given access to education and medical care.”

And that’s just the beginning of their efforts.

  • Ten percent of the cups that they sell are going to be made from post-consumer recycled materials.
  • The actual packs that hold the coffee are now made 20 percent smaller, so there’s less waste.
  • The merchandiser, what companies and offices can use to display their coffees is made from 90 percent post-consumer recycled content.

I was able to ask Daniel Vennard, the Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director for Mars Drinks, a few questions about their initiatives.

Why is Flavia making moves to be environmentally responsible?

There are two drivers for FLAVIA taking steps to become more environmentally responsible. First, we recognized the increasing environmental pressures in the world and understand that sustainability is an important issue so we wanted to do something to help. Second, we know that sustainability is important to our customers too, and our goal is always to meet our customers’ needs the best we can.

What makes Flavia standout from the other single serve coffee producers and coffee machine makers?

The key thing for me is that we figured out that the vast majority of the footprint of a cup of coffee comes from the energy used by the machines to brew each cup. To fight that, we’ve updated our machines to use 40% less energy than other single serve machines. This is a huge difference! The other piece that helps us to stand out is our commitment to recycling, specifically through our partnership with TerraCycle. TerraCycle is now upcycling waste from FLAVIA Fresh Packs into a wide range of office products such as pencil cases and notebooks.

I think that the moves that Mars Drinks and Flavia have made are great, I wish more companies would do the same, but are there plans for more?.

Yes, we indeed have more plans and are committed to a pipeline of sustainable innovation. We can’t give out any more details right now but make sure to look out for a number of other initiatives throughout the year.

Hopefully, more companies will take the initiative make similar environmentally friendly moves. I know that many coffee consumers are looking for products that are more eco-friendly, so there is a market for it.

It’s nice to see that even very large companies are thinking about the environment and actually doing something to make it better for future generations as well as those who grow the coffee we love.

My brewer broke the 2nd day of operation. Sadly it broke on a Friday and not customer support on weekends.

Not a happy consumer.
