Good Coffee Doing Good Things: Costa Rica “Pepe” From One Village Coffee

The Drink: Costa Rica “Pepe” from One Village Coffee
Type: Single Origin
Overall Rating: 4 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs

The latest coffee to appear in my mailbox comes via One Village Coffee, a coffee roaster in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. They seem like my kind of coffee roaster and it starts with the name. The village that they’re talking about is a village of growers, pickers, a roaster and coffee drinkers. They think that coffee, when used properly, can be used to foster incredible quantities of communication, community, and collaboration.

They are a Certified B Corporation, which is a new type of corporation that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Corps are unlike traditional businesses because they: Meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards; Meet higher legal accountability standards; Build business constituency for good business. However, that’s all pretty meaningless if the coffee isn’t worth sipping. The coffee came in plain white bags, luckily, I found that their Costa Rica “Pepe” wasn’t just an average cup of coffee.

Costa Rica “Pepe” started off with a fruity and floral aroma with hints of nutty scent.

I didn’t have anything to complain about in the taste department either. The taste was fruity, but not wine like. It tasted more like drops of cantaloupe juice had been infused into the beans. It was a smooth sip with just a hint of sourness or maybe tartness in the after taste.

I did not see Costa Rica “Pepe” listed on their website, but if it comes available again, I’ll update this post with the price.

Overall, Costa Rica “Pepe” from One Village Coffee was a nice way to start the morning. It was a flavorful cup of coffee, but it wasn’t too flavorful. It earned an above average four on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale.

I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface with One Village Coffee, stay tuned because I have two more beans from this coffee roaster to taste.

Fine Print.

  1. Does it have a nutty flavour? I’m curious … I’ve recently started drinking coffee again after giving it up for over 8 years. I’m finding since travelling to Cuba and a few other countries I love the taste of great coffee.

This may be one I have to try!

Not much of a nutty flavor on this one. If you’re looking something that’s got a pronounced nutty flavor, I would skip this one. Although you’d be missing out, it’s a good coffee.

Which country had the best coffee?
