Hazelnut Eight O'Clock Coffee

Hazelnut from Eight O’Clock Coffee Review

by Mike on November 24, 2009 in Coffee Reviews

The Drink: Hazelnut from Eight O’Clock Coffee
Type: Whole Bean Flavored Coffee
Overall Rating: Two Out Of Five Coffee Cups

Eight O’Clock Coffee has been one of my long time favorite coffee companiess that I could find in grocery stores. The prices are usually pretty reasonable and the tastes were usually pretty good. I thought that their French Vanilla flavor was average, but with the Hazelnut flavor it was below average.

The price was right, it was buy one get one free, but the taste was more than just disappointing.

The aroma made believe that I was about to taste a delicious coffee. The smell coming from my cup was a relaxing, hazelnut scent. It was just about perfect and not at all overwhelming like some flavored coffees I’ve smelled in the past.

However, the taste was anything but delicious. My first sip tasted lifeless and bitter. I was hoping it was because the coffee was still too hot. However, even after it cooled down some more, the taste didn’t improve.

There was a nutty-hazelnut taste, but there wasn’t much to it. The back end of the sip was bitter and void of any taste. It was enough where I thought about adding creamer or sugar to save it. The aftertaste, had a dry minty feel. Not exactly what I was expecting from a hazelnut flavored coffee because it almost tasted like medicine.

Then I read their description:

Lightly roasted. For smooth, mild coffee taste, complemented by the delicious, nutty flavor of hazelnut.

I couldn’t have disagreed with it anymore.

The bag did have a best used by date on it. The date was 9/23/2010, so I’m assuming that it was roasted in September. This coffee tasted pretty lifeless to me and if you waited until September of next year, I can only imagine what it would taste like.

Overall, a below average showing. It earned a two out of five on the Daily Shot Of Coffee rating scale. Maybe, I just got a bag from a bad batch or something like that. I was disappointed by this coffee. Eight O’Clock Coffee has been one of my longtime favorites, but this will definitely make me think twice before picking up my next bag of their coffee.

I’m not really a big fan of Hazelnut flavored coffee, not that two out of five cups wouldn’t make me want to try it anyway. Haha.

Yeah, I would stay clear of this one if I were you.

I tried the regular and really enjoyed it. However, I found the hazelnut to be an unpleasant experience. I’ll probably end up dumping it out.

Oh my! As some one who drinks 8′oclock regular or hazelnut everyday… either you got a bad bag or I’m a lame coffee connoisseur! Hahahah I hope it was the preceding of the two! I still have the french roast you gave me. I am not a big fan of french roast either. So ‘Jedi’ coffee master what is your favorite pick for a hazelnut coffee?

Either Jarbee if you don’t mind buying your coffee online or I’ve found Joffrey’s Hazelnut in stores around here.
