Historic Coffee House Opens In Colonial Williamsburg

R. Charleton Coffee House

Coffee has a long history in the United States and it comes together in a new coffee shop in Colonial Williamsburg. Last month, the R. Charleton coffee shop opened their doors and started serving 18th century style coffee, tea and chocolate.

The love of coffee is nothing new to Americans. Thomas Jefferson said that coffee was “the favorite drink of the civilized world.”

Reconstruction of R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse was made possible through a five million dollar gift from Forrest and Deborah Mars of Mars Incorporated, the food manufacturer. He developed an interest in Colonial Williamsburg as a youth during family visits. As an adult, he has been supporting The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for nearly 25 years.

Mars’ American Heritage coffee & tea blends follow the historic tradition, using beans from the West Indies and black tea leaves from India. However, there is one huge difference. The R. Charleton coffee shop is using single serve coffee machines with Flavia coffee.

American History was one of my favorite subjects in school, so this is definitely one coffee shop that I’d love to visit and review.

Oooh, yet another reason to go to Williamsburg next time I’m out east.

I’ve lived most of my life on the east coast and I still haven’t made it there yet. Have to get there sometime.
