Ice Brew Lemon Coffee

Do not Blame me, I was having one of my uncontrollable geek coffee moments. There is just no normal way to put this. I was just following the call of lemon and coffee. It is an idea I have been toying with recently. I’m not like most coffee drinkers, I need tangents occasionally and this is the most unique one I have come up with.

The reality of this drink is that it’s Cold Brew Coffee with Coffee ice, I used Kohana Hawaiian Prime, with two Slices of lemon, and a little agave nectar to sweeten the cup. That it, nothing else, it is that simple.

This does not work with coffee that is brewed using hot water brewing methods, like a French press or percolator. Hot Coffee and lemon combined have too much acidity. Well at least to me. I tried this drink with water ice and coffee ice made from cold brew coffee. Coffee ice is the way to go. You get a cup that is a journey, if the drink is sipped slowly. The Coffee ice mixes in as it melts, altering the coffee flavor of the cup without watering it down.

I could have made simple syrup for the chilled cold brew lemon coffee, but I chose Agave Nectar. It is my sweetener of choice because it can dissolve quickly and has a low Glycemic index (I’m on a diet) . Agave nectars are sold in light, amber, dark, and raw varieties. Light agave nectar has a mild, almost neutral flavor, and is therefore sometimes used in delicate tasting foods and drinks.

As for the style of cup or glass you place cold brew lemon coffee in, that is entirely up to you. I have used coffee cups, a beer glasses, a tumblers, they all worked well. I personally liked using my favorite coffee cup (image at the top) the most though.

This all started One day, when my wife said, “Have you ever put lemon in coffee? You have put it in everything else it seems.” She was on to something. So after some trials and errors, I found the balance. I now have a new summer drink.

It looks a little like as a summer drink it could benefit from a touch of Havana white rum!

That does sound delicious! Although, I might wait until a little later in the day to try it out.

who’s adding rum already ? :)
i have to admit i use lemon slices
with tea all the time but haven’t tried
them with coffee…either hot or cold brew.

Interesting idea to use agave nectar as a sweetener….hadn’t thought of that. And yes – I’ve used lemon in my coffee before, but it isn’t a favorite of mine.

Sounds good. I like the light rum idea too. Sounds very refreshing. I would have never considered lemon in coffee before now. Great idea.

Agave Nectar is a great way to sweeten up drinks. It is also very available in stores now. Also, thanks for the note on not to put the lemon in hot coffee. Adding a new flavor to coffee is always an nice way to change things up a little

This actually sounds really good. Especially to bring out the subtle citrus notes of the Hawaiian Prime. I never put lemon in anything but I may have to try this, minus the rum.

I love that first photo, it’s so cute! Where did you get the cup? I’m going to have to dust off my Toddy and make some lemon iced coffee. Sounds like a wonderful summer afternoon pick-me-up to sip on the porch!

I love these shots as you make the coffee feel so inviting. The thought of the lemon in our 100% Hawaiian Prime is a new one to us at Kohana Coffee but we love that collaborative idea making. I think pairing it with the agave sounds delicious.

Cold brewed coffee keeps us going in these hot summer months – we look forward to the change of weather in late spring just to bring the cold brew out. Look for us to have a new Organic/Fair Trade Cold Brew product out soon.
