Komodo Blue Dragon From Rocketfuel Coffee Review
The Drink: Komodo Blue Dragon From Rocketfuel Coffee
Type: Organic Whole Bean
Overall Rating: Four Out Of Five Coffee Cups
In the middle of south east Asia there’s an island called Flores. Flores is located about 200 miles to the east of Bali, and is northwest of Timor. The island is one of the few places on earth where Komodo dragons can be found in the wild. It’s known as the “island of flowers,” named by the Portuguese not because of flowers, but rather by the colorful coral reefs that surround the island. The terrain is rugged and the island has both active and inactive volcanoes which have created especially fertile soils ideal for organic coffee production.
On of these organic coffees is that comes from this region is the Komodo Blue Dragon by Rocketfuel Coffee. I’ve had several amazing coffees from this Canadian coffee roaster and was hoping to continue the trend with this coffee.
From the first sniff, I had a feeling that I was going to like this coffee. Komodo Blue Dragon had a sweet aroma with hint of chocolate that reminded me of a bar of dark chocolate candy and a floral scent that reminded me of walking past a flower shop. There was also a slightly smoky flavor hovering around it all. If the taste of the coffee was half as interesting as the smell, I had a feeling that I was going to love this coffee.
Komodo Blue Dragon had a darker roast taste, however it was still loaded with flavor and was still exceptionally smooth. My tongue was first greeted with a smoky taste, but it was a pleasant smoky flavor. There were the hints of the chocolate that I had smelled a few minutes earlier, but there was also an earthy taste. The good kind of earthy flavor. Not a dirty feel by any means, but it reminded me of a natural earth like flavor. Plus at the end of the sip, there was just a hint of a wine-like flavor. The after taste had a darker, almost ash like flavor. Overall, a winning sip.
In a french press, this coffee seemed to have a heavy body.
The only thing that’s hard to swallow about this coffee is the price. It’s $20 for half a pound, however, it’s well worth it. The taste was above average and the coffee looks to be on the rare side of things.
I’ve had a lot of great coffees from Rocketfuel Coffee and I’d say the Komodo Blue Dragon was another award winner in my book. It earned an exceptional score of four on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale.

That’s a really amazing blog review. Since you’re reviewing an Indonesian coffee, it might be semi-washed processed, which would give it a heavier body. Sounds like a great coffee. I like most of what comes out of that growing region, and I’ve had micro-lot coffees from Timor too. Interesting name for the coffee – It could be easily confused with the Starbucks coffee of almost the exact name …? (Komodo Dragon coffee by Starbucks)
Thanks – reviews of good coffees like that one seem to be easier to write.
i’m just glad there weren’t any real lizards
in that half pound bag Mike… darn glad.
(i do love the color graphic on the bag!)
next decision -> do i chase flavor and a
superb coffee but manage to ignore the smoke?
My answer would be wait until you read my review of the other new Rocketfuel Coffee. It might be more up your alley.
