Magic City Blend From Higher Ground Review

Magic City Blend

The Drink: Magic City Blend From Higher Ground
Type: Whole Bean Medium Roast
Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 coffee cups

When I browsed through the Go Coffee Go website, the amount of well known specialty coffee roasters overwhelmed me. I wasn’t used to having this many choices, but one stood out fro the rest.

Not only had I heard many good things about the coffee roasted by Higher Ground, read that they were Roast Magazine’s Micro Roaster Of The Year, but what really impressed me was there commitment to organic and fair trade coffee.

One of the Higher Ground coffees recommended on the Go Coffee Go website was the Magic City Blend. I wasn’t disappointed.

The Magic City Blend had a light and sweet aroma, with a mix of scents from blackberries, cherries and blueberries. It wasn’t a strong scent, it was pleasant scent that was gentle on the nose.

With the first sip, my thought was that I could drink this coffee every day.

The coffee had an intricate flavor. It was like each time it flowed across my mouth, I was getting a different flavor.

Around the edges was just small hints of berries. There was a touch of milk chocolate and a dash of sugar.

A smooth feeling, with just a little bit of bitterness ran across my tongue.

The after taste was a fading version of that “intricate coffee” taste, with a little bit more of a chocolate flavor. And it was even more smooth than the initial part of the sip.

The Magic City Blend is a perfect every day coffee. At only $8.99 for a 12 ounce bag, it was a bargain. It earned an above average rating of 3.75 out of 5 on the Daily Shot Of Coffee rating scale.

For the record: This coffee was partially purchased using a gift card provided by Go Coffee Go. It didn’t influence my opinion or content on this coffee one way or another, just that I purchased coffee via their website for this review. If anything it was held to a higher standard.

I live in Alabama, where Higher Grounds is roasted and we brew them at PieLab (mmm.pielab.org). Magic City is definitely a great blend, also try their Jones Valley Farm blend! It’s one of my favorites.

I have another coffee from Higher Ground, their Pap New Guinea. I can’t wait to try it. I think I’ll probably be ordering more from Higher Ground in the future, so I’ll have to remember about the Jones Valley Farm Blend.

And on a side note, very cool website and lab.

We are constantly trying Organic foods around the house, I know that Organic milk is the only milk I can drink. Looks like I have a new coffee to try, you know where to drop it off.

Organic coffee has really opened me up to other organic foods. I learned so much about why it’s better than non-organic.
