Moka Java From Volunteer Coffee
The Drink: Moka Java from Volunteer Coffee
Type: Whole Bean Blend
Overall Rating: 3.5 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs
We continue the dark roast trend going on over here this week with Moka Java from Volunteer Coffee. It’s their French Roast and a year ago I would’ve been very nervous to try this blend. You can blame all of the over roasted coffees that I sampled, but I’m finding more and more dark roast coffees that have more flavor than just burnt bark and house fire aroma. I was hoping that this one would fall into the flavorful side of things.
On a side note, in case you were wondering about the Volunteer Coffee name, it’s because for every bag of coffee they sell, they donate one dollar to the volunteer organization of the buyer’s choice. That alone makes me want to support their company, so hopefully the coffee itself is worth mentioning.
This full bodied blend is deep and earthy with some bright notes and that signature Volunteer Coffee smoothness…not a bitter drop in this coffee!
-Volunteer Coffee Description
Even though I’ve enjoyed some great dark roast coffees recently, I was still nervous as I poured it from my french press and into my mug. Right away, I detected a smokey aroma and saw a very dark, dark french roast shade to the liquid java in my cup.
Further aroma research shed light on a nutty/earthy aroma with just a hint of smokiness. I smelled hints of a chocolate and a little bit of spiciness. So far, so good again!
It was hard to miss the strong, heavy body and just how smooth the sip was. They weren’t lying.
Still no complaints, but I wasn’t completely done yet. I was still worried that it might taste like a burnt piece of furniture. It did have a dark roast taste, hints of smokiness, but it was still something that I could like and there was more than just dark roast flavor. I picked up on earthy flavors, a nutty flavor, and drops of chocolate.
A 12 ounce bag of Moka Java is $10.49 on the Volunteer Coffee website. Overall, a reasonable price, especially when you consider that a dollar goes to a volunteer organization of your choice.
Overall, Moka Java from Volunteer Coffee earned a solid 3.5 on the five point Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. It’s the kind of french roast that even I (yes, the light roast fanatic) could enjoy.

Seems like a way to enjoy good coffee and support a good cause! Definitely would make me more likely to choose this coffee over others because of the fund raising element – maybe more producers should consider similar ways to help those less well off – enjoyed the article thanks!
