Not A Holiday Favorite: Peppermint Mocha From Nescafe

The Drink: Nescafe Peppermint Mocha
Type: Flavored Instant Coffee Beverage
Overall Rating: One Out Of Five Coffee Mugs

I’ll admit that I have a few weaknesses. I don’t like alarm clocks, I have an internet addiction and I love peppermint mochas. I know the coffee snobs out there are probably raising their noses in the air as they read this, but I’ve been drinking peppermint mochas around the holidays since before I knew that coffee could taste good without sugar and cream.

Those same snobs are probably ready to laugh when I mention instant coffee, but in a pinch when I don’t have access to a french press and a grinder, I wouldn’t mind putting together a cup with one of the Nescafe Taster’s Choice packets. I never thought I would like them either, but a few of them were drinkable and they are way better than the instant stuff that Starbucks makes.

I was hoping that I could say the same thing about Nescafe’s Peppermint Mocha.

Things started off good. I picked up a delicious chocolate aroma with a mild mint aroma in the background. It reminded me a lot of those peppermint mocha drinks that you can buy from the coffee chain that’s on every corner across the country.

The taste was full of flavor, but in this case it wasn’t necessarily a good thing. The main flavor that couldn’t be missed was the mint. It was overwhelming and had a little bit of a chemical flavor to it. There was a hint of chocolate flavor, but the coffee/espresso flavor was completely missing.

If you’re feeling brave, you can find Nescafe’s Peppermint Mocha at Walgreens, Walmart and Target.

Overall, Peppermint Mocha from Nescafe earned a one on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. Before it becomes a holiday favorite, it needs more mocha and it really needs some coffee flavor. Even if you’re a peppermint mocha fan, avoid these at all costs.

Fine Print.

You’re a very brave man, reviewing these. In a pinch, I’ll drink almost anything that resembles coffee. But this might be too far.

LOL, thanks. If they just dialed down the mint some, I think it wouldn’t be bad to satisfy a guilt pleasure craving. I’ve had a lot worse coffee than this in a pinch.

Mike you have to cheat to enjoy these drinks.
you don’t drink them as coffee blends …you add them
    to real coffee as flavors.

As soon as I opened a packet of NesCafe’s instant Limited Edition peppermint mocha, the fresh aroma of ground coffee struck me as being different from a typical freeze dried or powdered coffee. I knew I was in for a treat!

NesCafe makes it easy for the Holidays…just empty a packet into your cup, fill it with hot water, and doctor it up according to your taste preferences. I topped mine with a cocoa dusted marshmallow and let it sit on top for a few minutes before stirring. I noticed that the marshmallow absorbs this drink’s intensely natural-tasting peppermint. Best of all, each cup is sugar-free and only adds 5 calories to your diet. Try finding that at your favorite coffee shop!

    maybe you forgot the marshmallow?

i bet, in addition to the intense mint part, your tongue was twisted
    by the sweetner they use…

My girlfriend tried it as a coffee blend. After her review of it, I was going to have to past on trying it as a flavor additive. However, now I’m wondering if it might be good with some hot chocolate and I’m definitely adding a marshmallow or two on top.

These small packages always scare me off. The only drinkable stuff from Nestle was some 3 in 1 coffee drink, probably only cause of the dried milk powder in it. However in case of emergency, you don’t really have so many choices… But just out of curiosity, I will check if this mint flavour is available also in Europe.

  4. Thanks for the warning Mike. This sounds scary even for me and I drink instant coffees. (Shh, don’t tell!)

    Merry Christmas,

    Ardee-ann

    • Mike says:

Merry Christmas to you too Ardee-ann! And don’t worry I won’t tell anyone, you’re secret is safe with me….sometimes I do the same when I’m stuck at work with no quality coffee in sight.

  5. I am a peppermint mocha flavored coffee freak. The latte at Starbucks is a little too much for me so I just get a venti coffee with two pumps of each syrup instead of the usual 4 pumps they administer…sometimes I make it a red-eye as well. I am going to the Apple store in Manhattan and I’m going to get one today! Sorry that the Nescafe only got one cup…it must have been pretty lame.

    • Mike says:

      It was lame!

I go back and forth. Sometimes it’s too sweet, sometimes it’s exactly what I’m craving. Either way, I’ll have to try your version, especially the red-eye soon.
