Patriot Blend From Newhall Coffee Review

Newhall Coffee Patriot Blend

The Drink: Patriot Blend From Newhall Coffee Roasting Company
Type: Whole Bean Medium Roast
Overall Rating: 3 Out Of 5 Coffee Cups

Last month, Newhall Coffee Roasting Company sent me three of their coffees to review. Their California Blend was above average I grew to like their French Roast. However, I was disappointed, or maybe the better way to describe it was confused by their Patriot Blend.

The bag says that it’s a medium roast, with a full body and with a smooth finish. Pay attention. This will become important very shortly.

When I ripped open the bag of the Patriot Blend, I couldn’t help but noticing that it looked a lot like a darker roast.

The aroma coming from my coffee cup a few minutes later smelled like a dark roast, or at least medium-dark roast. Partially hidden by a slight charcoal flavor scent was a woody-sweet smell.

Then I tasted it and my suspicions were confirmed. The dark roast took hold of my tongue, really setting the pace for the flavor. There was a slight taste like food that had been left on the grill for just a little too long. I’m not saying it was burnt, just darker than I was expecting from a medium roast.

I had trouble picking up any sort of flavors, but I think I caught a little nutmeg, some cinnamon and a slightly sweet overall flavor.

Initially it was very smooth, but halfway through the sip and more in the after taste, there was a slightly bitter feel.

For a darker roast, I thought it was something that I could enjoy. But if I bought it because it said medium roast on the bag, I would’ve been disappointed.

Overall, it earned an average three out of five rating. I think if it was labeled as a dark roast, the score would’ve been higher. Maybe, this coffee will grow on me. As I drank more of their French Roast it turned into something that made pretty good espresso and excellent lattes.

If you like dark roasts, I would say you should definitely try this one. If you’re looking for a medium roast, check out their California Blend.

And there is one more important thing to note, every purchase of the Patriot Blend seconds coffee to active military and their families.
