Peppermint Mocha Showdown: Dunkin Donuts Vs. Starbucks

by Mike on December 7, 2009 in Coffee Reviews

Starbucks Red Holiday Cup

My favorite holiday coffee is the Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks. I try to consume as much as I possibly can for the short time that is available and debate starting a petition to demand that it be on the menu year round.

When I found out that Dunkin Donuts was adding their own peppermint mocha to their menu, I immediately started planning a head to head competition.

I’ve had some poor customer service experiences at Dunkin Donuts in the past. I even imposed my own boycott, but I was willing to venture there again to try their Peppermint Mocha

However, the problems started the second that I pulled into the drive thru and asked for the peppermint mocha. They asked if I wanted it as a hot coffee or…their microphone cut out.

I asked for a latte. The Dunkin Donuts press release that I read about the Peppermint Mocha even called the drink a Latte, but I’m not sure that the employee working the drive thru had ever heard of a latte.

After more inaudible communication, I pulled up to the drive thru window and found a iced coffee waiting for me. Don’t know where they got iced coffee out of that, especially since it was the coldest night of the year. I debated asking them to redo it, but I had already given up.

Rant over, now to the good stuff.

The Drink: Dunkin Donuts Peppermint Mocha

The first sips of Dunkin Donuts latte were heavy on the mint flavor, with minimal chocolate flavor because it was all on the bottom. The mint tasted a lot like a toothpaste.

After the flavor mellowed out some, it tasted just like a regular iced coffee. I’m pretty sure they didn’t even attempt to blend it together.

Overall Rating: Two Out Of Five Coffee Cups. That’s not including points that should be taken off for my poor customer service experience.

The Drink: Starbucks Peppermint Mocha

The Starbucks Peppermint Mocha was just like I remembered. It’s like their regular mocha, but with just a hint of peppermint. The peppermint isn’t overwhelming and it blends perfectly with the rest of the drink.

As an added bonus, the Starbucks people were friendly, although maybe a little too over caffeinated.

Overall Rating: Four Out Of Five Coffee Cups.

It looks like I’ll be continuing with the Starbucks Peppermint Mocha as part of my holiday tradition.

Have you tried one or both? What’s your opinion on them?

The peppermint mocha is so addicting. I’ve had a few this holiday season and I wanted to get one so bad today, but I had to stop myself.

They are way too addicting. I haven’t had as many as last year, but that’s probably a good thing for my waist line. LOL

I’m not sure about peppermint in my Mocha, never been a big peppermint fan, but one of my favourite coffee drinks is a Latte with Baileys, hhmmmm ;)

I’ve talked to a couple people this year who aren’t peppermint fans so I think I understand. It’s still my favorite drink. A Lattte with Baileys is a winner, especially on a cold night in December.

I have been a fan of the Starbucks Peppermint Mocha for a while now. I have yet to experience one yet this season. As for Duncan Donuts, after your experience I just be thankful that we don’t have any here in the desert.

I should have endorsements from Starbucks for how often I’ve updated my status to say that I’m drinking a Caramel Macchiato, best drink ever! :)

I’ve not tried a Peppermint Mocha but my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Something to look forward to on my next Starbucks visit.

LOL, I’m right there with you on the status updates.

You have to go try it next time you visit it a Starbucks.

my wife adores this Peppermint Mocha which Starbucks brews/blends.
i think it’s a bit too sweet if you want my honest opinion but am not
adverse to sharing a cup with her on a cold drive back home.

another issue… this drink is a lot better when really warm or almost
too hot, than it is cold. i wouldn’t care to test out an unexpected
iced peppermint coffee at Dunkin. the one local to us has pretty
good donuts, but their coffee is way off. Dunkin does sell ‘munchkins’
which i like in moderation.

i haven’t mixed the Starbucks Peppermint Mocha with
those ‘munchkins’ yet but that is a good TO DO LIST addition.
i guess i’ll have to share some with my wife at some point.
(insert big smile to the wife here!)

I agree that it is pretty sweet and I don’t drink it every day…at least not this year. I like to mix it in with my regular routine of less sweet drinks.

Totally agree with you, it needs to be hot. I started just getting the talls, because with the grandes it was just not the same by the end.

I wish I could get Dunkin Donuts food without their coffee and without their service. In fact, I could go for an evening snack of some munchkins and Starbucks peppermint mocha right now.

We discussed this last week, I am trying one of these this week. Well since I don’t do Dunkin Donuts anymore I guess it will be the Starbucks one, or the Chik Fil A one.

I saw that peppermint mocha milkshake at Chik Fil A, I wonder if I can get them to add some caffeine to it.

I had a similar problem, where I asked for a peppermint mocha at DD expecting it to be a latte, and they asked me if I wanted cream and sugar so I was confused, restated that I ordered a peppermint mocha, and was asked again so I ordered it with milk and sugar. Apparently it’s just like peppermint mocha flavoring added to coffee. I really like it now that I know how to order it, it’s like a lighter version of the starbucks and more like coffee and less latte.
There isn’t a starbucks anywhere close at home except in barnes and noble and when I got a peppermint mocha there it wasn’t nearly as good as the ones from an actual starbucks (which I love btw, it tastes like love, and I hope your petition goes through!)

But taste-wise, I like starbucks better, it’s definitely a treat, but DD is good for just a regular coffee fix (and I feel a little less guilty about it haha)

I swear that DD advertised it as a Latte, but of course I haven’t seen an ad for it since then.

I’d retry the DD one as a hot coffee (way too cold for iced coffees right now), but with the service at my local DD’s I’m pretty nervous about them getting it right.

Thanks for the support on the petition, still working on it!

They must really like you because I asked around in late January and I got nothing but wait until next season.
