The Drink: Peru Femenino from Cush Coffee
Type: Whole Bean Single Origin
What do we have here…another bean from Cush Coffee? Last week, I checked out the Tanzania Peaberry, this week I’m checking out their Peru Femenino.
According to the Cush Coffee website, the Café Femenino Coffee Project is a social program for women coffee producers in rural communities around the world. More than 1,500 women in Bolivia, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru are active in the project to achieve empowerment, build social and support networks, and earn incomes through the production and sale of the Café Femenino Coffee. The success of the Project initiated the creation of The Café Femenino Foundation, which provides grants to select programs and projects that enhance the lives of women and their families in coffee growing communities around the world.
Great story, but of course, what it really comes down to is how the coffee tastes.
My Review
The Peru Femenino had a mild, sweet aroma. First, I found chocolate and soft fruit flavors like peaches and plums. Around the edges there were hints of spices and it became more spicy as it cooled. The spices were like a mix of lemon pepper and cinnamon.
The taste, exotic. It started with a tartness of lemons, bakers chocolate mixed in and I found a bit of lemon pepper. As it cooled, there was more chocolate flavors and a sweetness took out and balanced the tartness of the coffee.
The coffee was mostly smooth, a hint of bitterness snuck in at the end.
Six ounces of Peru Femenino is $14 on the Cush Coffee website. At that price, not many people can make it an every day kind of coffee. However, it is worth the price tag and does help a good cause.
Final Score
Overall, this wasn’t my favorite Cush Coffee offering. Don’t get me wrong, I still liked it, it earned an above average 3.5 on the five point Daily Shot Of Coffee scale. I kept going back and forth on this coffee, it didn’t blow me away like some of their other beans. I’d love to try it as cold brew, I think that would work well with some of the tartness. I just think that the balance wasn’t there until it cooled down.
