Poll: Are You A Starbucks Fan?

by Mike on March 13, 2010 in Polls

This week’s poll is “Are You A Starbucks Fan?” It seems like people either love or hate Starbucks?

Are You A Starbucks Fan?

  • I'm In The Middle (52%, 34 Votes)
  • You'll Never See Me There (30%, 20 Votes)
  • I Stop There Every Day! (18%, 12 Votes)

Total Voters: 66

I’m somewhere in the middle. There’s somethings that I really love about Starbucks, like their Dark Cherry Mocha. However, I’m not always a fan of their coffees. I’m more of a medium to light roast drinkers and their coffees are definitely aimed at people who like a darker brew.

Plus, there is the whole over saturation of Starbucks and I’ve seen them push some smaller coffee shops out of business when they open up on the same block. However, they were one of the first “gourmet” coffee shops that I ever visited and were my gateway drug to my coffee obsession.

So what about you? What’s your opinion on Starbucks and why?

Last week’s question was “Do Labels Like Fair Trade Matter To You?

There was some great discussion over on the post, lead by Coffee Nate so make sure you check it out.

The results were close with the “Yes” answer leading with 39% of the vote. “Sometimes” and “No” were tied with seven votes each.

You can open up a can of worms with your blog post on this topic, but I am of the belief that there is more than one way to skin a cat. A coffee can be ethically sourced absent a special ‘fair trade’ label which requires the farmer to pay a licensing fee to Fair Trade Association. Some coffee roasters are moving away from FT to “direct trade” (Intelligentsia, Stumptown), and Starbucks as CAFE Practices and Shared Planet.

Do they matter?
OF COURSE THEY DO!

Fair Trade Certified ensures a certain set of standards, I won’t go into all of the details, but I did cover them all in a recent post. While it is true that simply being certified FairTrade does not ensure quality, that is up to the buyer/roaster/consumer!

As long as the coffee tastes nice, then I don’t really care to be honest, but I suppose I’m upsetting someone, somewhere, which that comment ;)

I do love Starbucks for some of their specialty drinks however I would much rather have my everyday coffee brewed at home (and NOT costing $5 a cup)

I had a similar experience with you, Mike, where Starbucks was my first real experience with coffee that didn’t come out of a grocery store can. But these days, I find that their coffee can be so strong and dark sometimes that it makes my stomach hurt. I tend to prefer a coffee now that has more subtlety and complexity. That said, you may still find a cup of their coffee in my hand from time to time.

I’m fairly ambivalent towards Starbucks – their quality is a little patchy and the blend they use for espresso-based drinks is a little on the harsh side, only really works for me in latte or flat white.

That said, I’m finding myself frequenting Starbucks more often, just because they’re so ubiquitous.

I think it’s pretty obvious that I am Starbucks fan. I might even be what they call a brand evangelist.

I’m not a fan of Starbucks. I think they are to coffee what McDonald’s is to hamburgers. If you can’t find anything else or in an unfamiliar area, you can count on a fairly consistent level of mediocrity.

I think it would be difficult for me to ever abandon Starbucks. Similar to you, they were my first “real coffee” experience and we have grown together over the years. They’re still very high on my coffee list and there are no local shops that make a better cup near me.

I do not love Starbucks, I dont like their standard coffee, it utilitarian , like dunkin donuts. Their espresso is decent when needed. They used to have more variety , now, meh

I voted I’m in the Middle. I always view Starbucks as a convenient spot to get WiFi and not so much for the coffee. But then again my company has lots of coffee from the vending machine, and that’s how I get my daily shot.

I like starbucks but I just find them way over priced. That being said I limit what I get and how often I do go there. I like the Caramel machacado but for over $4.00 a cup for the grande size is a bit much. What’s real funny is when you take and multiply out their cost by oz. to a gal. So lets do the math 1 US gallon = 128 US fluid ounces -1 Starbucks Grande is 16oz. so 16 into 128 is 8 and 8 x $4. = $32.00 a gallon! Wow compare that to the price of gas. No wonder they have so many stores.
