Poll: Coffee Maker Or French Press For Reviews?

by Mike in Polls

This week’s poll is “Coffee Maker Or French Press For Reviews?” It has a lot to do with last week’s poll “How Do You Make Your Coffee?” The number one answer last week was the drip coffee maker. French Press, which is the standard that most coffee reviewers use, didn’t even come in second. It came in third. That started me thinking, would you find it more useful if I did the Daily Shot Of Coffee reviews with a coffee maker, since that’s what most people use to make their coffee?

Coffee Maker Or French Press For Reviews?

  • French Press (58%, 22 Votes)
  • Coffee Maker (42%, 16 Votes)

I can’t decide. French Presses bring out more of the flavor, but if most people are drinking coffee from the standard counter top drip coffee maker, wouldn’t it be more beneficial to do the reviews with one of those? What do you think?

The results of last week’s poll were, drip coffee maker with with 41% of the vote.

I do it in several ways, sometimes I use my Tassimo and sometimes I cheat and use, dare I say, instant!!!. But I opted to select a Drip Coffee Maker, which I always think makes a nice coffee ;)

i use the family Keurig K-Cup system to make my travel mug coffee in the wee hours before i leave. it’s very quick, consistent and cleanup is minimal.

later, i have the time to setup and grind, brew, and savor a pour thru mug full with my lunch.

I use a vacuum pot to brew. Once I tried it, I cannot go back. It just never fails to brew a great cup.

I use a stainless steel stove top espresso (Moka).

Bought an aeropress a few weeks ago, love it!

Lately I have been using the Clever Coffee Dripper. But I still like my Chemex, Aeropress, or Melitta pourover. Looking forward to learning the v60 Hario cone soon. I only drink machine drip from my Fetco brewer at our bakery, which took me 2 weeks to dial in.

I find I’m using my moka pot most of the time. Although I did use the Aeropress for the first time in almost a month, the other day. And I started more cold brew in the french press this evening. I also used my little single cup french press to make a hot cup last week.

French Press finished up with 21% of the vote.

I am a French Press woman although I have been known to use the drip coffee pot on occasion. Drip coffee is easy to make, I will grant it that.

The espresso machine finished last with 8% of the vote.

Thanks to everyone that voted!

Mike you’ve got a good point here… A lot of users are using a coffee maker for their coffee, but what about the other small amount of people who use their french presses for making coffee?

It leaves a dilemma.

Why not do your reviews for both? Talk about what you taste in the coffee maker, and then talk about what you taste in the french press.

This may also show coffee maker users what they are missing by using a coffee maker.

EDITORS should work more than the rest of us Mike.
do both. :) + :)

i’m thinking that you could compare and contrast the
differences in what your highly trained senses detect
in the two approaches. plus …don’t you have a lot
of sample coffee and need something useful to do with it?

Any coffee that really deserves to be reviewed should be reviewed at its best. If people are sitting down to really enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee, they’re better off using the french press to prepare it anyway.

While I drink more drip brew coffee, it’s practically swill that gets me through the day. If I’m to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee–and this is when I’d be breaking out the good stuff–it won’t be drip brewed. I don’t even have a drip brewer at home…

I wouldn’t mind seeing some reviewed using both methods, though — I’d be curious to see if you run into any blends that are better drip brewed than pressed. More likely, though, it really wouldn’t/won’t make that much difference.

I can see brewing coffee both ways for a review but really (and I admit my bias) you get a truer flavor of the coffee and its essence from a french press. I can’t tell you about chocolate velvet undertones or citrus notes dancing across my taste buds but I can tell you if coffee is good or not.

I think drip brewed coffee is convenient and I think french press coffee tastes best, has complexity and is full of true coffee flavor. I think that coffee reviews should be done with a french press unless you are brewing a coffee made for drip pots only.

That is my opinion anyway!

Ciao!

In my house, my boyfriend really likes the Melitta Pour Over method to brew coffee, and I definitely think it would be interesting to see that in your reviews! I do like a nice French Press too.

I have to agree with the ‘both’ category although I voted for French Press out of the two. It sounds more labor intensive but to get a more true test I’d try it at least 2 ways or throw in a Chemex as your middle ground brewer to get one, clean, consistent comparison. My experience is that it’s harder to control consistency in the auto drip compared to how easy it is to control variables in the pour over or press methods.

After having to use ONLY an automatic coffee maker for the last month and finally getting back to my favorite brew methods – it really shows me what all is left out of an auto drip.

Jamie has a good suggestion doing both and comparing and contrasting them, if you should choose to do so. I don’t know that it matters as long as you are consistent. If you are consistent I can “learn” over the course of time how your review compares to my experience so I can predict whether or not I will like the coffee. I would say, if you are going to choose only one, it should be the French press. Generally speaking, if the coffee is good in the press, it will be good in the drip coffee maker, but the reverse is not necessarily true.
