Poll: Do You Drink Decaf?

This week’s poll question is pretty simple and straight forward. “Do You Drink Decaf?

I was over at Coffee Nate’s blog today, when I came up with this question while I was watching his video about how decaf coffee is made.

I can drink caffeinated coffee and go right to sleep most of the time, but there’s times when it is late in the evening and I’m in the mood for coffee, but I know if I drink caffeinated coffee I’ll be up all night. That’s when I’ll turn to decaf. I’ve had a few companies send me decaf coffee to review, but other than that I really don’t drink too much of it. Simmer Down from Marley Coffee is my favorite that I’ve had so far, but I do have more on the list to try soon.

What about you? Why or why not? If you do drink decaf, do you have any suggestions on which decaf coffees to try?

Last week’s poll question was “Do Your Own Coffee?

The overwhelming answer with 77% of the vote was no. However, it sounds like the poll may have sparked an interest in at least a few of you. I know it’s something that I want to try very soon.

Six people voted that they roast coffee for fun. Normally, I include a few quotes from the comments here, but the people that said that they do roast their own coffee left so much help information that I just suggest you read the comments here. There’s lots of great advice for people interested in roasting their own coffee. I know that I’ll be following up on that advice when I get crazy and try roast coffee for myself.

No one answered that they roast coffee professionally, although I know at least a few professional roasters do stop by here from time to time.

  1. Decaf is like non-alcoholic beer. Not sure why it exists.

  2. Not acceptable. I don’t even consider it coffee :) All though I really have never even tried it before.

  3. Hey Mike, Thanks so much for the mention! I have only tasted a few decafs, and none of them were very yummy at all! Even one from one of my favorite roasters tasted like half a coffee, it was obviously missing a huge chunk of flavor. Sadly, there are those forced to endure the awful imitation of our favorite beverage, and hopefully there is some decent stuff out there. I’ve found some that scored pretty decent with other reviewers, but I can’t vouch for them myself. Thanks again and take care!

  4. Mike,
You must have been listening to my doctor Friday afternoon he was telling me caffeine is not good for my bones. I’m trying to get enough calcium and vitamin D in my diet so now I’m going to add decaf and hope it makes a difference. So on the way home from his office stopped and bought a bag of “Community whole bean decaf”. Ground and brewed a pot last night was very satisfied with the results. It was very fresh not musty had a nice light roasted flavor now all I have to do is get the water to coffee measured correctly and I’ll have it right. The directions said use 2 tablespoons per 6 ounces of ground coffee. I might have to play around with it so it’s not too weak. Community is based in Baton Rouge, LA so it has to be good like most everything from LA. Put me on the “decaf list” as of Friday. Not my idea just following doctor’s orders.

  5. I don’t drink decaf at all. The main reason is not because it doesn’t have caffeine, it’s because it has no flavor. I have yet to find a decaf with any redeeming quality to it at all. I wish I could because then I could drink it close to bedtime. Oh well. There is always my chamomile tea for a late night beverage.

I wish I was one of those people that could drink caffeine until bed time with no problem but then again would it do as good of a job waking me up in the morning?

Joke for you from my 5 yr old daughter. “Do you know where to keep decaf at?”
    “No”
“In the de barn next to decaf!” Ha ha ha…Uhm yeah, pretty lame but shes only 5. But she does help me get the coffee pot ready for morning and she knows how to brew a great pot of coffee.
