Poll: Do You Have An Espresso Machine?

by Mike on October 31, 2009 in Polls

Espresso Machine

This week’s poll is “Do You Have An Espresso Machine?

If you don’t, what kind of coffee makers do you have?

Up until last night, I had lots of ways to make coffee. I had the good ol’ drip coffee maker, a French Press, an Aeropress, but for my birthday I received an espresso machine. I already feel like my life has changed for the better and I just started experimenting with it.

Last week’s question was “Do You Like Pumpkin Spice Coffees?

Yes, won with a 64 percent majority of the vote.
Chris said:

Those pumpkin spice lattes are pretty darn good, when I’m in the mood for some serious sugar intake. But I rarely drink anything like that. Still, pumpkin flavoring can be really good in coffee drinks.

However, 16 people did vote against it.

Geri said:

To tell the truth I’d rather have a slice of pumpkin pie with some lite whipped creme on top along with my black coffee. I don’t think pumpkin spice coffee would go down to easily it sounds too rich. I’m game for the lighter offerings I find. I’ll donate my mug of pumpkin spice coffee to anyone who wants it.

Thank you to everyone that voted this week. There were a total of 44 votes, our most yet. Keep up the good work.

I Have 2 Espresso Machines The Lil Starbucks Barista, N A Lil Delonghi, Which I’m Probably Gonna Donate OR Do A Coffee Drawing With. I Actually Have A Stove Top Espresso Maker That’s Made By Benjamin & Medwin. That Lil Machine Rocks! To Be Honest I’m A Collector Of The Antique Coffee Machines, For A Few Reasons, But 1 Main Reason Is To Produce A Good BODY Coffee In A Stove Top Percolator Or A Plug In. It Gives Me Great Joy, To Produce Outstanding Coffees Using Older Methods, Back In The Day They Only Had One Bean U Loved It Or Hated It. Thats What Started All The Bad Coffee Talk, Back When People Drank It Because It Was Strong Or Bitter. You Never Heard Of Producing Great Coffee Through Percolators Etc. Until Now, I Love Crafting, If You Haven’t Noticed! Happy CoffeeING c|_|

I really want to try a stove top espresso machine. It might be my next challenge.

As far as the percolator, I’ve heard it can actually make great coffee, but I’ve never seen it.

I did have one, but sadly it decided to give up on me, I do miss it and as soon as I can afford a new one, I’ll be out like a rocket to pick one up ;)

Now that I have one, I can’t imagine living without it.

Mike Reply:

The Jura Impressa C5 is one of my dream machines. The Bialetti or a similar brand is something on my list to try soon.

I own a Gaggia espresso machine. Need to use it more.

They have a lot of nice espresso machines. I wouldn’t mind having one.

Yes I own a espresso machine can’t tell you the brand it’s hidden at this moment. It is under the counter in that “Bermuda triangle” doesn’t everyone have stuff there? I used to use it all the time but in order to make space in the kitchen it was put away. Now that I’m going back to paying more attention to what I’m drinking and how it’s prepared etc. I’m going back to it again. I might need a chiropractor getting it out again but it will be worth the wear.

Mike Reply:

Yeah, I have a ton of stuff under my counter too. It really is like the Bermuda Triangle because some of it hasn’t been used since I moved into this house. I’m really not even sure what’s in some of those cabinets exactly.

No machines here for me all though I can’t even really say I have even had an espresso before.

Next time I’m in your neighborhood, I’ll have to bring the espresso machine.

I don’t have an espresso one per se, but I do have my Bialetti Muka Express stovetop cappuccino machine (I would like to buy their espresso one as well, I see Target carries it now – how random!). I LOVE IT. I know I’ve waxed poetic on my love of Bialetti before, but it really is worth it. The Italians know how to make a good espresso/cappuccino machine/pot.

As to an electric percolator, my mom swears by hers. My dad got her one for Christmas a few years ago and she loves it and had wanted one “because it makes the best coffee.” I don’t know if I’d agree with the BEST, but it is good for sure.

I’m down with stovetop, all about Slow Food/Drink :) That’s how it started, and that’s how it’s made best!

Devon, you’re always getting me to try new things. Or at least want to try. Add the Bialetti to my list of things to try. However, now that I think about and the caffeine is kicking in, I think it was already there.

I finally ordered one! I didn’t want to just buy and El Cheapo model, but I couldn’t afford the $2K for a dream machine either. I ended up buying one that retails for about 475, but got it much cheaper. I’ll let you know how it turns out! I love espresso, and I’m afraid I’ll be overdosing on the caffeine…one day at a time ;)

Devon Hernandez Reply:

Nate, how much caffeine is in a shot of espresso? Because from what I understand, the darker the roast (in the case of espresso roast, this is pretty dark), the lest caffeine; conversely, the lighter the roast, the more caffeine.

[Reply]

Nate Reply:

Hey Devon. The amount of caffeine in a shot of espresso is generally about the same as a cup of coffee. BUT, a cup of coffee is about three or four times the volume of a shot of espresso. In regards to the amount of caffeine in dark roast compared to light roast, it is true that darker roasts generally have less caffeine by volume. Robusta coffee beans hold about twice as much caff as the more tasty Arabica, and some espresso blends have robusta in them to create more crema. It is also not a hard and fast rule that you would use a darker roast for espresso. This is a generality, and some parts of the world prefer light roasts for espresso. I like it all :)

Mike Reply:

Ever since I learned that Robusta beans had more caffeine, it almost made me want to start drinking more robusta…almost.

“Lil Starbucks Barista, N A Lil Delonghi”
- they’re not espresso machines ;)

I’ve got two, a Bezzera HX & a La Vibiemme HX. Might be worth the next poll being “do you have a burr grinder”? =)

[Reply]

Mike Reply:

That would be an interesting poll. I know a few readers do. I have the next poll already ready to go, but you might see that one in the near future.

Coffee making equipment I currently have : two French press; one 2-serving Moka Express; three 2-serving ibrik; one 4-serving ibrik; one large, one medium, one small Arabian style pots; one Melita drip; one electric percolator; one Hamilton Beach drip 12 cup, with programmable timer; one MrCoffee drip 4 cup. I have gold mesh filters, but prefer the unbleached paper, as the mesh allows a fine sediment through which upsets my stomach. The many different kinds of equipment that can be used to make our favorite beverage are fascinating and beautiful, and my collection is far from complete. I enjoy decorating my living and dining areas with the brass, glass, copper, chrome & stainless steel.

Mike Reply:

I think you’re further ahead of me on the collection, but I’m working on mine.

I was thinking about getting a gold mesh filter for my drip machine, I might hold off now after hearing your results. Or I might just try it anyways and live dangerously.
