Poll: Do You Like Your Coffee Black?

by Mike on February 6, 2010 in Polls

This week’s poll question is “Do You Like Your Coffee Black?

A few years ago, I’d load up my coffee with so much sugar and creamer that a few times friends asked if I wanted coffee with my cream and sugar.

Now, I drink my coffee black unless I’m in a scary place where the coffee is so bad that I have to hide the taste with cream and sugar. With good coffee, I never need any sweeteners or flavored creamers, things like that cover up the flavors and characteristics of a bean.

Why do you drink your coffee black? Or if you add sugars and creamers, why?

Last week’s question was “Do You Drink Decaf?

Sixty-nine percent of you said that don’t drink decaf.

Kim Randall said:

I honestly don’t think I have ever had decaf. I simply enjoy the caffeine in my coffee. Speaking of…..Time to get some coffee :-)

Un said:

Decaf? Hell no!
Joke for you from my 5 yr old daughter. “Do you know where to keep decaf at?”
“No”
“In the de barn next to decaf!” Ha ha ha…Uhm yeah, pretty lame but shes only 5. But she does help me get the coffee pot ready for morning and she knows how to brew a great pot of coffee.

Jason Coffee said:

I don’t drink decaf at all. The main reason is not because it doesn’t have caffeine, it’s because it has no flavor. I have yet to find a decaf with any redeeming quality to it at all. I wish I could because then I could drink it close to bedtime. Oh well. There is always my chamomile tea for a late night beverage.

I wish I was one of those people that could drink caffeine until bed time with no problem but then again would it do as good of a job waking me up in the morning?

Jennifer from Daily Demitasse said:

Decaf coffee is an oxymoron to me. I mean, what’s the point of drinking coffee at all if it’s not fully caffeinated?

Nate said:

I have only tasted a few decafs, and none of them were very yummy at all! Even one from one of my favorite roasters tasted like half a coffee, it was obviously missing a huge chunk of flavor. Sadly, there are those forced to endure the awful imitation of our favorite beverage, and hopefully there is some decent stuff out there. I’ve found some that scored pretty decent with other reviewers, but I can’t vouch for them myself.

Extreme John said:

Not acceptable. I don’t even consider it coffee :) All though I really have never even tried it before.

BWJ said:

Decaf is like non-alcoholic beer. Not sure why it exists.

However, twenty-two percent if you said that you do sometimes drink decaf.

Karen @ Blazing Minds said:

I must admit, I do drink Decaf, it’s mainly last thing at night, otherwise the caffeine keeps me awake all night ;)

And nine percent said that you drink decaf.

Geri said:

You must have been listening to my doctor Friday afternoon he was telling me caffeine is not good for my bones. I’m trying to get enough calcium and vitamin D in my diet so now I’m going to add decaf and hope it makes a difference. Put me on the “decaf list” as of Friday. Not my idea just following doctor’s orders.

That’s the ONLY way. I don’t care how bad I need coffee. If I know I’ll have to cover up the nastiness, I rather go without.

I like a “little” cream, sometimes even flavored. I try not to take away from the coffee, but I do like cream, no sugar though.

One tiny teaspoon of sugar and a splash of two-percent.

Good coffee is best black. Why cover up the flavor of good, fresh, well prepared coffee with sugar and cream. That’s like smothering a good steak with ketchup.

I use cream – soy or almond milk usually, no sugar. I’m not trying to mask any flavor it’s just too hot otherwise.

I like just a little sugar or splenda. Gotta watch the sugar(diabetic). Just enough to give a sweetness to it. I tend to make mine a little stronger than most do when I am working, so the little bit of sweetness makes it just right. On the day off though it is all black because it isn’t as strong as the work week. Absolutely no flavored creamers unless it is the end of the day unwinding cup or a special occasion.

I get forced to drink de-caf when we’re with family and brewing coffee later in the afternoon. I love the taste of coffee either ways, so I still drink it decaf. If it’s for me though, I always prefer regular.

I like some creamer and sometimes I put sugar. I like to taste the bitterness of coffee. And you’re right, too much of them masks coffee.

When i first started drinking coffee, I drank it black and loved it. I see no reason to fix what’s not broken. Black coffee is a nice healthy beverage before a bunch of sugar is added, so I prefer to keep it that way ;)

I drink coffee two ways really – Short thick and black, or large creamy and flavored… unless of course I’m trying to rate the coffee, then I’ll normally go 5-7oz. black, no sugar for a few sips, then a dash of half-half to see how that effects things… really just learning though!
Any tips on ‘coffee tasting’ or ‘cupping’, or whatever they call it?

My only real tip is to taste as many coffees as you can…good and bad and try to identify what you think they taste like, not someone else. Also, I’ve tasted a lot of fruits, spices etc just to see what they taste like.

Normally I Put a little coffee in with my cream.
I am very busy and I need a quick Daily Shot of Coffee 1st thing in the morning. I usally don’t have much time to sit and enjoy my coffe hot. I actually use creamer and some cold coffee to bring the temperature down so I can GUZZLE it quick and get a boost in the morning.
Now, if I actually get a chance to sit and enjoy my Jarbee coffee I will then enjoy it black and hot.

You know it! Having my second cup(also black, just like the first)of the morning right now. But like I’d said before, the Really hot stuff gets a couple splashes of half’n'half…I didn’t shell out for those asbestos lip implants, rofl!

I can’t drink black coffee. I need to have a little sweetener (often a dash of vanilla syrup) and more than a splash of half’n'half — I like my coffee warm, but not too hot!
