Poll: Do You Use A Coffee Grinder?
This week’s poll has a simple yes or no answer. “Do You Use A Coffee Grinder?”
Do You Use A Coffee Grinder?
- Of course! (80%, 69 Votes)
- No way! (20%, 17 Votes)
Total Voters: 86
I’m huge fan of coffee grinders. Getting a coffee grinder changed drinking coffee into an experience. I’m still thankful to my brother for buying me a bag of whole bean coffee for Christmas one year, because it forced me to buy a coffee grinder. I’ve never looked back since.
What about you? Do you use a coffee grinder? Why or why not?
The question for last week’s poll was “Coffee Maker Or French Press For Reviews?”
Based on the votes, I was considering switching from using a french press for brewing the reviewed coffees to a drip coffee maker. The votes were neck and neck all week long, however, by the end of the week it was clear that most of you think that I should keep using the french press. French press ended with 58% of the vote, leaving the coffee maker with only 42% of the vote.

Any coffee that really deserves to be reviewed should be reviewed at its best. If people are sitting down to really enjoy a cup of gourmet coffee, they’re better off using the french press to prepare it anyway.
There was support for doing both the coffee maker and french press, which seems like it might be the best solution to create the fullest experience.
Jamie Ferguson said:
Why not do your reviews for both? Talk about what you taste in the coffee maker, and then talk about what you taste in the french press.
This may also show coffee maker users what they are missing by using a coffee maker.

Jamie has a good suggestion doing both and comparing and contrasting them, if you should choose to do so. I don’t know that it matters as long as you are consistent. If you are consistent I can “learn” over the course of time how your review compares to my experience so I can predict whether or not I will like the coffee. I would say, if you are going to choose only one, it should be the French press. Generally speaking, if the coffee is good in the press, it will be good in the drip coffee maker, but the reverse is not necessarily true.
EDITORS should work more than the rest of us Mike. do both
Thank you to everyone that voted and everyone that took the time to leave a comment. Check out all of the conversation here. I’m still open to more feedback about the debate.

a coffee grinder is one of the best coffee decision ive ever made
Unless you buy fresh roasted pre-ground coffee from a local roaster or quality roaster off the internet, I am not sure it is possible to truly enjoy coffee. The next logical step from that is to buy from the same source, but in whole bean. Each step toward freshly roasted whole bean coffee ground at home is a step closer to greater coffee enjoyment.
The best chance anyone has at truly enjoying coffee to the greatest extent possible is to buy fresh roasted (or home roasted) whole bean coffee and to grind it immediately before brewing. I wish everyone would try it and taste the difference.
I am in the market for a coffee grinder, would love to know what people recommend everytime I go on Amazon to order one the negative reviews turn me off.
Donna, Howard is right, cost is a question that you need to answer. You also need to consider for what you will use the grinder. Are you grinding for an espresso machine? a drip coffee maker? a French press? If you are going to spend any significant money at all I would definitely recommend a burr grinder. I have a Capresso Infinity grinder that I love (but it is $75). If you are buying for an espresso machine that grinder will not work (I have a Nuova Simonelli for espresso).
Donna;
how much are you going to use it? if you are a cup a day drinker,
you don’t need a 24k plated grinder. i have a cheap Mr Coffee
IDS55 model that i can fit in one hand and it makes enough
grounds for 12 cups their way, less my way.
cost? less than $ 20. at the deli.
when i was visiting my grandparents in rural Ohio
a LONG time ago…. my grandmother used to wake us
kids up by grinding fresh each morning around 5:00 AM.
you’d have thought a gas weed wacker was mowing in the
kitchen by the noise it made. but it got us going and
she fresh brewed every day with a big smile.
Thanks for the quick replies, I am mainly looking to use the grinder once a day to grind coffee for my french press.
If it for a French press I would recommend that you NOT get a blade grinder. Spend the money and get a burr grinder.
Hope everyone is having a great summer sipping their brews hot or cold.
Down here on the Gulf of Mexico I’m afraid our minds have been distracted with the oil spill and thank goodness for “Daily shot of Coffee” to give our minds a rest. It seems as if summer just disappeared with so much on our minds. Thanks Mike and staff for the break. Getting to your questions of the day or days. Recently I wanted to replace our “Mr. Coffee” with something more updated and cool. Low and behold I found it was not going to be so easy. Ran into a couple problems wanted an American made machine not from China for safety reasons. I purchased a Cuisinart first and started it up with just water to clean it out and was blown away by “terrible plastic odors” no matter how many times I tried to use it was not happy with the plastics so returned it bought a Bunn brand since it’s from the USA and when I got it home the carafe did not sit secure. So had to return it. In the end I decided to use my French press. Also thought about dragging out my family relic the old percolator. Talking about going retro! Now what was the question? LOL Oh I remember now coffeemakers and grinders….Yes I am happy with the grinder have used it for 10 years have one for coffee and one for spices. Great price and easy to use and clean.
Grinder brand Braun
Yes, been grinding fresh for years now. Started with a little whirly/blade grinder but have used a burr gr. for awhile now(5-6 yrs?).
