I started experimenting with coffee when I was about six or seven years old. However, it was mostly for medicinal purposes because it helped calm my asthma. I didn’t become a full time coffee drinker until I was eighteen and at college, struggling to stay wake up for my early classes and staying up late to study.

What about you? When did you start drinking coffee and why?

Last week’s poll was “Do You Look For The Fair Trade Label When You Buy Coffee?

The overwhelming answer was yes with 63% of the vote.

When I was better off financially, I shopped fair trade and organic whenever possible. I was one of the seriously conscious consumers of the times. I boycotted products and vendors out of principal. I was activist in my shopping habits

Cate said:

I do like to buy Fair Trade coffees as much as I can :)

Nate said:

It is important for me to purchase sustainable coffees. Fair Trade is one way to do that. I don’t think that I should sip on a cup of coffee and save a few pennies, while the person that grew my coffee lives in a shack and can barely feed their children. I think we can all do our part to help the situation.

No had the remaining 37% of the vote.

Glenn said:

No, I prefer to buy Direct Trade coffee which is usually more equitable for the farmer.

More direct input by the buyer/roaster and often a higher price paid than the specified Fairtrade price too

I started drinking coffee before I was two. My meema made me “coffee milk” and I was hooked from then on. I have always enjoyed the flavor and complexity of a good cup of coffee and have survived many bad cups of coffee while living to write about them. LOL!

Coffee is the brew of the ages!

I can’t exactly remember how old I was, but it was certainly under the age of 10 and I loved it ever since, far better than tea (yuck!)

Ashamed to admit it, but I think I was under 10 when I started. My parents let me “taste” a little because they figured it wouldn’t hurt. Little did they know, I ended up loving the taste, and I was hooked on the flavor of coffee. It wasn’t ok for me to drink straight up coffee as a kid, but I got around that by eating coffee ice cream and coffee candies.
