For your drip coffee maker, what type of coffee filter do you use?
And why?
All the credit for this question goes to Geri for this week’s poll question. It’s something that I’ve had in the back of my mind for a while, but never thought to ask. Soon, I’ll start testing different coffee filters to see if I can tell a difference and maybe determine which coffee filter produces the best tasting coffee.
But for now, I use a bleached white paper filter. The only reason is that’s what my parents used and now that’s what I automatically pick up at the grocery store. I’m guessing that’s what most people use, but feel free to prove me wrong.
Instead of asking a poll question last week, I asked for your feedback. The response has been great and so far I’ve received way more answers than I expected! Thank you to everyone that took the survey and if you didn’t you can still take the short survey here.
The feedback is helping to determine the direction of Daily Shot Of Coffee 2010.
I can tell you already, that because of all of the positive response I’m working on an updated version of the coffee recipe book.
Also, there were many requests for reviews of coffee grinders and single serve coffee machines. I’m working on that too.
However, the majority of you said that you love the coffee reviews, so of course that will continue to be one of the main focuses this year. Not that there was really any question about that in my head, you could say you hate the coffee reviews and I’d still be doing them. I love tasting the different coffees, even the ones that end up with a lower spot on the rating scale. Thanks for the suggestions on the specific coffees that you’d like to see reviewed. I’m going to work on reviewing as many of them as possible.
If you didn’t already take the survey, please click here. It’ll take about a minute. And feel free to leave any feedback in the comment section there or email me.

When I actually use my drip machine, I use unbleached paper. I know fellow coffee purists are big on using nonchlorinated water for a better tasting coffee…so the next step is to ditch the bleached white paper filters
I’ve been using them so long I can’t remember if there’s a taste difference between the two (I’m sure plenty would tell you yes), but I cut them out initially to use less “toxic” things with unnecessary chemicals – I don’t want to drink bleach residuals in my morning joe. My prior coffeemaker (Gevalia) I actually used a gold tone permanent filter, which I really liked. I didn’t get funky tastes and it was easy to wash – no more running out of filters! I need to get one for my Krups some time soon.
The no more running out feature is enough for me to want to get a permanent one, but I think before I go that route, I’m going to test the other things, just to compare.
I use non-bleached, but I also have the option of permanent so I voted for the one I use the most which is non-bleached

Thanks for voting.
Although I have not used my drip machine for about 8 months, I use a gold permanent filter. I am a opponent of using paper filters, because I dig the oils…that’s where the taste is
Right now, I’m on a siphon pot kick, but I also enjoy using the french press and moka pot.

I was thinking about you when I was putting together this question, wondering if I should make it a hypothetical question!
lol…I was looking for the ‘none of the above’ option

Purposely left it out!
We use a permanent. There’s only one thing worse than waking up in the morning and realizing you’ve run out of filters. I can’t notice any difference between the permanent, bleached, or unbleached paper as far as affecting the coffee’s flavor.

I think I’ve run out of filters more often than coffee, luckily I have a couple of methods of making coffee that don’t require a paper filter now.
I’m going to take a guess here and say that we use a permanent filter. Coffee rookie.

I seem to remember someone who called it a day after one cup recently.
When in stock I use the unbleached tan filters. At this time thinking about the gold ones I’ve read about and heard from others here on this site. Always look for something that is not chemical related. At this time we heard our tap water is the worst in the state so considering another source. Always something! I’ll drink to that!
Yeah, I’m not to fond of the water in our state. There’s so many things I hate about it, but the hard water stains are really driving me insane right now.
