Searching For The Perfect Coffee Maker

Earlier this week, I received an email from a reader named Ken that came up with the quandary:

In the mid 60′s I had a drip coffee maker that sat on top of the coffee cup. It was a simple aluminum 2 piece device. Bottom was a strainer that held the grounds and top held the hot water. It brewed straight into the cup. Wonderful for camping, hunting and hurricanes when you woke up with the bare necessities. I would like a 3 piece item made of Stainless Steel. #1- 16 -20 oz SS cup #2- SS strainer capable of holding 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds and #3 a reservoir that would invert and fit in the coffee cup using the strainer as a snap top. I use a multi-fuel camp stove as a heat source for boiling my water. It would be convenient and durable and priced out in the $20 – $30 price range.

He even took the time to put together this sketch when I told him that I was going to share his search with you guys and gals. (Click picture for full size).

I’ve never seen a coffee maker that fits his description, but do you know this coffee maker? More importantly, do you know where to get it?

I’ve never seen one like that, but it would be perfect for camping. I would be interested in buying a few if anyone ever finds out where they can be purchased. It even looks like the handle of the mug is a carabiner.

  2. I have one of those three piece coffee makers, but not one with a cup at the bottom. It has a reservoir at the bottom, with a place for the coffee to sit in between, then the perfect coffee emerges at the top within a few minutes. Strongly recommend getting one!

Seems a bit like an aeropress, but if you want to use something for camping a moka pot may be a good substitute.

I have tons of friends that are big into hiking and back-packing. They always have their essentials for the trip (water, food, and whatever needed to brew some coffee). This would be an ideal device if it on the market. This sold at a place like REI would be gangbusters. Also, nice touch with the carabiner handle.

Mental Health Day sounds good right about now. But then again, I’m still waiting for my coffee to brew and it usually changes my outlook on Monday mornings.

Yeah, this sounds like a Vietnamese Phin filter coffee maker. They are actually quite inexpensive. You can even get them on Amazon, but here is a link: http://www.vietnamese-coffee.com/coffee_accessories_shop.php

    Hope this helps.

I’m not sure if that’s what he’s looking for, but it definitely looks like something that I would like to try.

I found one that is very similar in concept, the BRUNTON FLIP n SIP. It is 3 pieces, a double wall SS 16 0z mug, the middle, ground coffee/filter section which is not SS, and the SS reservoir in which you heat your water.

Price ranges from 30 on up…and up….and I was surprised that Amazons was as high as $39, but w/ no taxes & if you have PRIME, no shipping, not bad.
There is one review there that is worth reading, and several outdoor blogs, magazines have also done reviews. Gear Patrol has the best pictures http://gearpatrol.com/blog/2010/02/22/brunton-flip-n-drip-coffee-maker/

  9. B'racha says:

Btw, re. the Brunton FLIP n SIP, I checked REI online and, although they carry many Brunton products, they do not yet have this listed. Might be worth giving them a call, particularly if you are a member.

Also wanted to apologize for the full length URL in prior post; I need to figure out which little url software to get.

Thanks for sharing the link, I’ve never seen something like that before and it looks like something that would come very useful when I go camping.
