The Drink: Shell Shock by jAVERDE
Type: Ground Flavored Coffee
Roast: Medium Roast
Overall Rating: 3.25 out of 5
Shell Shock sounds like it should be an ice cream flavor, but it’s the flavored coffee from jAVERDE that I enjoyed this weekend while I was back in Chicago. It’s a flavor that I’d normally avoid in an ice cream, but I couldn’t get enough of it in coffee form.
Shell Shock is a “jittersweet” combo of a bold roast taste and turtle sweetness of pecans, chocolate and caramel.
When I made a pot of Shell Shock, a sweet aroma filled the house. From my cup, a smell of rich chocolate like Hershey’s Kisses, a smooth caramel and maybe a hint of strawberry floated into my nose.
From the very first sip, my tongue was coated with a sweet-nutty taste. There were the pecans, chocolate and caramel that I expected, but there was also hints of maple syrup and a creamy vanilla.
For me, the bitter after taste lost some points on my score sheet, but Daily Shot Of Coffee Sr, my dad said that the aftertaste was great, except maybe it was overall a little on the weak side. Of course, this is coming from a guy who likes his coffee extra strong and will keep filling up the coffee maker with scoops of coffee until it can’t close anymore.
A bag of Shell Shock costs $9.65 for 12 ounces, five percent of that goes to help plant trees, via a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. The jAVERDE company has a goal of planting 10,000 trees by 2010 and for every dollar raised, one tree is planted. I’m always looking for the companies that are actively taking a role in helping the environment. So an initiative like what they are doing can help me choose their coffee over another company’s.
It’s an above average coffee, 3.25 out of 5 rating and earns bonus points because the company is so environmentally conscious.
This company is based out of Knoxville, Tenessee but you can also buy their coffees online at jAVERDE.com.
