Single Origin Peaberry From Doi Chaang Coffee Review

by Mike on February 26, 2010 in Coffee Reviews

The Drink: Single Origin Peaberry From Doi Chaang Coffee
Type: Whole Bean Peaberry
Overall Rating: Four Out Of Five Coffee Mugs

Doi Chaang’s Single Origin Peaberry is a very unique type of coffee, the type that I don’t see very often. I’ve only sampled peaberry coffee a handful of times and I’ve never tasted coffee from Thailand before. When Doi Chaang Coffee sent me a half pound of it to review, I couldn’t wait to rip open the bag and grind up some beans for the french press.

But first, a little bit of background. A coffee cherry usually produces two flat sided beans, however there’s times when the cherry only makes one oval shaped bean, the rare bean is called a peaberry. The peaberry is smaller but has a higher concentrated flavor.

The Doi Chaang Coffee Company is a unique partnership between the Akha hillside tribe of Doi Chaang Village, located in the Chiang Rai Province of Northern Thailand, and a small Canadian group of coffee enthusiasts. The Thai farming family co-operative cultivate and process 100% Arabica, organic, single-origin coffee beans while the Canadian experts roast, market and distribute the coffee. The literal translation of “Doi Chaang” is Elephant Mountain which describes the imposing shape of the hills rising behind Doi Chaang Village.

But now the important part – the review!

The Doi Chaang Peaberry earned an elite 91 score on the Coffee Review scale, but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to get a free pass at Daily Shot Of Coffee.

However, right from the first sniff, I knew I was going to like this coffee. It had a pleasant, dark roast, almost tobacco like aroma. Mixed in were earthy, cherry and chocolate scents.

The taste was smooth and my tongue loved it from the first sip. It had a serious coffee taste. It wasn’t bitter, but it wasn’t overly sweet either. It started with a distinctive dark roast flavor, followed up by a tiny fruit explosion on the end. Mixed into the flavor was subtle hints of a dark cherry and a woody taste.

It was a dark roast, but the kind of coffee that even a medium to light coffee drinker like myself could like because of all of the flavors in it.

Overall, a good coffee. It earned a well above average rating of four out of five coffee mugs. At twenty dollars for a pound of it, it’s probably not an every day coffee, but I strongly suggest trying it out

Those 3 bags look familiar! ;)

Just had some of the peaberry last night and I really enjoyed it. My personal preferences with coffee tend to lean towards that direction.

Hahaha! I’ve noticed that there’s a handful of times when myself and other coffee reviewers will get the same coffees. I like seeing the differences in what we think about the coffees and how the ratings vary.

Thank you! That was not only a good review of the product but quite educational too. I’ll be looking out for peaberry coffee in the future and sounds like that would be a great brand to try!

I’ve always been drawn to Peaberries, due to the unique flavor for one. Actually, most coffees I roast have a few peaberries mixed in… it’s a lot of work to hand-sort peaberries, hence the higher prices (and hence their being in most every bag of green). This peaberry sounds pretty good with the dark cherry and woody taste, though I am rarely a fan of dark roasts. I would be interested in the cultivar of the peaberry. Guess it depends on the customer base though… 100% Arabica doesn’t say much to me. (cool to see they have the “Civet-processed” coffee!)
