Sonic Mocha Java Chiller – What I’m Drinking

by Mike on September 3, 2009 in Coffee Reviews

Sonic Mocha Java Chiller

The Drink: Sonic Mocha Java Chiller
Type: Dessert Coffee Drink
Overall Rating: 3.25 out 5

When I think Sonic I think fast food delivered to your car door at two in the morning, I don’t exactly think coffee, but after hearing Marye Audet at Kettle And Cup rave about the Java Chiller, I had to go try it.

I was expecting something along the lines of the Coffee Toffee from Wendy’s, more dessert than any coffee drink, but the Mocha Java Chiller surprised me. I’m not going to go as far as saying it’s a true espresso drink, but I could actually taste the espresso, or at least hints of it.

Sonic says that they use a premium roast espresso, I’m not sure what that really means, but I can tell you that I liked this drink. Before I was even three blocks away from Sonic, I was already halfway done with it. It had a lighter body compared to the Coffee Toffee, so it was a lot easier to drink. Plus, it definitely tasted better.

The Mocha Java Chiller is espresso with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup on top.

The chocolate really caught me by surprise, it was a lot richer and authentic tasting than I was expecting. I thought it would be more of a processed chemical taste, but this tasted like a melted chocolate candy bar.

The whipped cream tasted fresh and almost handmade. I’m sure it’s not, but it did give me that feeling.

But there were some things that I didn’t like about it. When I grabbed hold of my cup the first time, the Styrofoam and lid were so weak, that the lid popped right off. I had to take emergency maneuvers to make sure that it didn’t get all over my shorts. Plus, the cup was made out of Styrofoam – who uses Styrofoam anymore? Those two things made me take off a quarter of a point.

The taste was good enough to where I’m giving it a 3.25 out 5 rating. I’d even go as far as to say that I’m now willing to try some of their other drinks. If I’m looking for a coffee related dessert drink while I’m out on the road, this would be my first choice.

You can get a Sonic Shot (extra shot of espresso) in there too…just sayin..

I can’t touch styrofoam because I have a weird touch sensitivity thing..so I take a glass and have one of the kids set the cup in it…

Glad you liked it.

marye – I’ll have to try the extra shot of espresso

MAS – Don’t worry it was just a special treat. I think these drinks could be dangerous they had so much sugary goodness.

That looks mean! I will have to try it if I ever find a Sonic near me. I live in Southern California and have never seen one of these restaurants. The funny thing is I see one of their hilarious commercials at least once a week, but I’ve never laid eyes on a Sonic.

But this drink looks pretty delicious.

Wow, I haven’t attempted to drink anything like that since I found out how fat they make me! I’d have to loosen my belt buckle a notch after that one.

coffee lover – this one definitely has a lot of sweetness in it.

Chris – I used to live in an area that didn’t have a Sonic, but still had the commercials, so I know your pain.

Chad – Yeah, it’s definitely not an every day kind of drink for me.
