New York Times - Coffee Cups

All the news in the coffee world last week that’s fit to print…more or less.

A Morning Pick-Me-Up in Many Flavors and Cups
Growing up in the New York metro area, I remember the blue Greek-themed “Happy to Serve” you cups. Now, when you buy coffee from a street vendor in New York City you might see something like cups with “Raymond James Stadium” or “Capital One” logos. Capital One makes sense to me, but Raymond James Stadium is here in Tampa, Florida. Turns out that these and many other random coffee cups are surpluses and misprints. I really must be a coffee a geek after all, because I thought this story was pretty interesting.

Police: ‘Fight Club’ inspired NYC Starbucks blast
The 17 year old who was arrested for bombing a New York City Starbucks in May may have been inspired by one of my favorite movies, Fight Club. It’s bad ass movie, but if you start trying to live it out for real, you may have watched it too many times.

Coffee customers pay it forward
In more positive news, at one Missouri coffee shop, there’s been more than 1,000 customers “paying it forward,” or buying the drink for the person in line behind them. I had this happen to me once at a Starbucks drive thru in Indiana. It was a rainy, dreary day and I was already late for a meeting, however the act of kindness made my day a lot better. Next time, I go through a drive thru or a toll, I might have to be on the buying end for someone else. Have you ever paid for another stranger’s drink, toll or anything like that?

And now from Dunkin’: Frozen Cappuccino
Last week, Dunkin Donuts added a new drink to their portfolio, a Frozen Cappuccino. Before I started drink a lot of Iced Mochas, cold Cappuccinos were my favorite kind of summer coffee drinks. Anyone tried the Dunkin Donuts version yet? I suppose that I could go force myself to see if the Dunkin Donuts location near me sells it.

After the Doughnuts, Coffee
The New York Times looked into the taste differences of Dunkin Donuts and the coffee of Tim Hortons, the Canadian chain that replaced a handful of Dunkin Donut locations across the city. They concluded that the Tim Hortons coffee was just about the same tasting: “It’s almost identically bland: perhaps a touch smoother and with marginally more flavor.

How to Get Free Coffee with Your iPhone
I love my BlackBerry phone, but it doesn’t get me free coffee. Right now, Iphone owners can download the free Barnes and Noble App and get a free tall iced or hot coffee at any Barnes and Noble cafe.

Coffee obsession becomes business
I’ve never been to a Blue Bottle Cafe, but even before I read this article, I wish there was one near me. Now after reading the story of the founder of the company, James Freeman, I’ve added it to the list of coffee shops that I must visit some day.

Easy cappuccino brownie with coffee icing recipe
This sounds better than the coffee brownies recipe that I’ve been playing around with, I might have to give this one a shot.

Bags Of Imported Coffee

Overall, a pretty slow week in the world of coffee news. However, there were a few highlights worth checking out…

Colombian coffee comes with smuggled cocaine
This might get you really going in the morning. Customs agents in New Orleans, intercepted a coffee shipment that came with a hidden half ton of cocaine. I’ve tried a lot of different things in my coffee, but I think I’m going to pass on that one.

McDonald’s Mocha Mondays Mean Free Coffee For Customers
In Coffee Wars news, McDonald’s wants everyone to taste their McCafe drinks. Starting this Monday and running through August 3rd, they’re giving away samples of their hot and iced mochas. I might have to find an excuse to head over to McDonald’s on Monday. For research purposes of course.

Dunkin’ Donuts officially departs Penn Station to make way for Canadian chain Tim Hortons
In other coffee war news, Dunkin Donuts lost a battle. They’re closing down shop in New York’s Penn Station and are going to be replaced by Tim Hortons. I didn’t see that one coming. It should be interesting to see if this is the beginning of Tom Hortons becoming a household name in America, the way it is in Canada.

VASSALBORO Owner wants to replace topless coffee shop
Remember that topless coffee shop that burned down last month? Well, the owner is working to rebuild it as quick as they can. I realize today that I may be a coffee geek, because I started to wonder if they’re going to start roasting their own beans and wondered what they’re going to offer on their menu.

Forget the health fascists, coffee IS good for you!
An entertaining and informative article by Dr Stephen Alexander, an Associate Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at the University of Nottingham.
