The Drink: Surf & Snow From Newhall Coffee
Type: Ground Flavored Coffee
Overall Rating: Three Out Of Five Coffee Cups
Most people go away for a beach vacation and pack things like sunblock and flip flops. In many ways, I’m not like most people. I loaded my suitcase with coffee. One of the coffees that I couldn’t resist packing was the Surf & Snow Blend from Newhall Coffee. There was zero snow during my getaway, but there was more than enough surf.
Newhall Coffee says that the blend is inspired by the ideal California day – surfing and skiing or snowboarding the same day. It’s created with Brazilian beans that are roasted to a city roast to “enhance the caramel vanilla flavor.”
At first, I liked this coffee and was ready to go hang 10. It’s safe to say the aroma wowed me. Steam flowing from my coffee cup had a sweet vanilla caramel aroma that caught my interest. I also picked up small hints of chocolate.
However, the taste had me thinking wipe out. An almost overwhelming dark roast flavor dominated everything, leaving the caramel and vanilla behind. The after taste had a slight chemical taste that didn’t make me want to get back up on the board and try it again.
Surf & Snow was an okay coffee, but if you’re looking for caramel or vanilla flavored coffee, I would check out Starbuck’s offerings. This coffee was drinkable and earns an average three on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale, there just wasn’t much to write home about it.
If you’re looking at Newhall Coffees, I would check out their Bow-Chicka-Pow-Pow Blend or Organic California Blend. And if you’re thinking of buying Newhall Coffee online, use the coupon code QZ742, which is good for 10% off until October 1, 2010.

come on Mike. you know the perfect beach coffee
would look more like Pam Anderson and the other
Baywatch women than this…
or Alexandra Paul but who’s really arguing?
i ought to setup a solar collector to make hot
water and run a 12VDC coffee mill. that might
be the perfect beach coffee.
in a way i’m glad you didn’t have another exceptional
flavor moment. i’m just now finishing the bag
of Guatemala Finca Liquidambar which would make a pretty darn
spectacular beach coffee. i even asked Pam to serve it but she didn’t
have her agent get back to me yet.
