Toddy Cold Brew Coffee System Preview

Toddy Cold Brew System
On sale at Amazon for $30.99. Retail price is $37.50

Just in time for the real heat of summer, Seattle’s Best sent for review one of their Toddy Cold Brew Systems. It sounds like the perfect way to keep cool and stay caffeinated during the hottest months, but I’ll give it a thorough inspection to see just how good it is.

“(The Toddy) is the ultimate coffee maker.” -The Washington Post Now you can create a ‘coffeehouse’ coffee – served steaming hot or iced cold, and in the comfort of your home – for much less than expensive signature coffee drinks! As important as those fresh roasted beans are to your cup of coffee, it’s what you do with them that counts the most. In 1964, as a chemical engineering graduate of Cornell, Todd Simpson developed and patented a cold brew system that, using regular coffee beans, creates a superior-tasting cup of steaming HOT coffee. And, with 67% LESS ACID than coffee made by conventional hot brew methods, it’s easier on sensitive stomachs. The Toddy coffee maker extracts the coffee bean’s true delicious flavor and eliminates much of the acidity, producing a bold, super-smooth coffee that can be served one cup at a time. The Toddy brewer is also ideal for making tea – served hot or over ice.

- description from Amazon

During the testing of the Toddy Cold Brew, I’ll attempt to tell if it causes less problems for my stomach. But the most important test will measure how the coffee tastes.

I’ll also look at how difficult it is to use and brew the coffee concentrate.

Have you tried the Toddy Cold Brew Coffee System? What did you think about it?

And finally, do you have any questions about the Toddy Cold Brew System that you would like answered?

Fine Print.

In case you’ve tried cold coffee made as described at http://www.caffination.com/food-n-coffee/cold-brewed-coffee-2391/ , I’d like to know how the stuff made with this is different.

    • Mike says:

I’ve talked briefly to Pzul and I think it’s a similar concept, just the Toddy brews it over a shorter time period. However, his way is a method that’s on my list to try at some point.

  2. Jack says:

I look forward to your reactions, see if it is worth a purchase living up to the remarks made by the Washington Post. It will cool off the coming steamy nights in DC. Ohh la la

    • Mike says:

Yeah, I’ve heard you guys are getting hit pretty hard with the heat up there. I’ll tell you that the Toddy is keeping me cool down here in Florida, but then again it has been rainy and cloudy just about every day.

  3. howard says:

if the reduced acid coffee is still the full flavored taste
that i enjoy, i’d say it was some unique device.
i’ve done coffee concentrate before and felt guilty
when i put the liquor away in the fridge.
i read the Amazon reviews and visited the website.
they gave short verse to how the concentrate
is with hot water later. about 99% of the literature
online was how to make the concentrate…
not how to enjoy it later.

    • Mike says:

With the literature they sent me, they included several recipes for hot drinks like cappuccinos, lattes, etc. However, for now I’m sticking to the iced coffee. Maybe that’s all I need or maybe I’m just a traditionalist and go to my favorite coffee shop to get a latte based with an espresso shot.

hmmm Mike you are making me crave one now.

the chemist in me is thinking there must be a graph
that describes how much acidity is released from the
    beans as water temperature rises.
i wonder if it’s totally linear?
    anyone know?

Hi Mike! It’s hot in Seattle today! (Our summer just started this week! LOL). So I started the morning with a cold brew coffee from 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea, and I was totally impressed with the balanced and smooth flavor through out. I might have to get one these toddys for home! Thanks for the review. How did you end up liking it? Did you try that “Beach House” coffee they sent?

    • Mike says:

We’re about three months into our summer…want to trade?

Overall, I was impressed too and better tasting than regular iced coffee. I did try the Beach House, it was above average, but I don’t have a final score tallied yet.

  6. Kay says:

I would like to know if it yields the same amount of coffee per scoop of coffee beans. Also, how easy is it to clean? Thanks!

    • Mike says:

That is a good question. I’ll do the math and let you know when I do the full review of it. As far as cleaning, it was surprisingly easy.

  7. Julia says:
