Top Chef Showdown – Wolfgang Puck K-Cup Vs Emeril K-Cup
Today’s K-Cup battle stars two celebrity chefs, the Wolfgang Puck Breakfast Blend and Emeril’s Gourmet Coffee Big Easy Bold. Both are better known for their cooking and restaurants, but now have their eyes on the coffee market. Do either of them have what it takes to make delicious and successful line of coffee?
The Drink: Wolfgang Puck Breakfast Blend
Type: Medium Roast K-Cup
Overall Rating: 3.25 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs
The only description that I could find about the Wolfgang Puck Breakfast Blend was this short line:
Wake up on the bright side, with fresh aromas and a smooth taste.
No mention on the menu of what beans makes up the blend, what sort of aromas (fresh doesn’t count), but that didn’t stop me from being adventureous and putting it into my Keurig machine.
Less than a minute later, I had a cup of coffee with a warm, nutty aroma. There were hints of honey and an overall sweetness.
The Wolfgang Puck Breakfast Blend had mild nutty flavor and tasted pretty much like what I’d expect a medium roast coffee to taste like. It did have a lingering darker flavor towards the back end of the sip and in the after taste, but overall was pretty medium.
And overall that’s how I’d describe it. It was medium, nothing too great to write home about, but it wasn’t bad either. It earned a slightly above average 3.25 on the Daily Shot Of Coffee K-Cup scale.
On a side note, a 24 pack of Wolfgang Puck’s Breakfast Blend is $10.95 on the 1QuickCup site.
The Drink: Emeril’s Gourmet Coffee Big Easy Bold
Type: Dark Roast K-Cup
Overall Rating: 3.25 Out Of 5 Coffee Mugs
Emeril’s Gourmet Coffee Big Easy Bold had more of a description:
This classic Parisian roast is a thick, hearty blend. Its deep, dark color and invigorating aroma will definitely kick it up a notch. Big Easy Bold uses a minimum of 50% Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee beans.
Still no mention of where the beans are from and I want to ask why couldn’t they have used 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee beans, but it was a step in the right direction.
The Big Easy Bold had an aroma as advertised. It was invigorating and intense, with a strong nutty flavor. I also picked up on hints of chocolate.
The intensity continued in the taste. It was a strong nutty flavor with a classic dark roast taste.
Even as a K-Cup it had a heavy body to it. Most of the K-Cups that I’ve tried seem more on the medium side of things.
The Big Easy Bold was slightly cheaper, $10.50 for a 24 pack at 1QuickCup.com.
Overall, I liked the Big Easy Bold, but it was a little bit too strong for me. However, I think that anyone that wants their coffee strong and is in a rush, would like this one. It also earns a 3.25 on the Daily Shot Of Coffee scale.
This round was a tie, but I do have some more K-Cups from Emeril and Wolfgang lined up to do battle in the Keurig soon.

i also enjoy the Emerils k-cups Mike.
both the Big Easy Bold and his Vanilla Bean Bam!
i haven’t tried the Wolfgang Puck Breakfast Blend
but as a rule, the medium k-cups i’ve tried have
been a bit “underpowered” if you want a word for it.
i ‘think’ it’s a matter of how much coffee is in them.
the k-cup mantra is that they put extra grounds
in any coffee made ‘bold’ or for brewing over ice.
still, compared with the amount of coffee i use
in a simple pour over myself (coffees i’ve
purchased on your recos included) the
k-cup taste is a bit less strong for most all
of them; regardless of whose name is on the
top seal!
I find that using the small size, gets the best taste of out it. Of course, I need to go back to the Keurig more often, but I’m willing to make that sacrifice.
I like the reviews Mike, especially the head to head style. Perhaps an idea for future posts, is to do a bracket style “coffee off” a la March Madness. Though it may result it crazy caffeination. For example, reviewing all or a chunk of coffees from X roaster.
An idea, just going off my Stream of Coffee’ness.
I think that’s an awesome idea and not just because it would lead to massive caffination. I think I’m going to have to do that, just having to figure out the details. Might have to do it to coincide with the basketball tournament in March.
