Trying To Satisfy A Craving: French Vanilla Face Off

Here I go again, cruising for a bruising, hoping to find that magical K-Cup that tastes incredible. I’m sure that some coffee snobs will say that’s impossible and there’s a good chance that they’re right. However, I’m taking back my title as that coffee crazed maniac that will try any coffee once.

This week’s K-Cup face off features four French Vanilla K-Cups. I was hoping one of them might be able to satisfy the bit of vanilla craving that I had.

The Drink: French Vanilla From Green Mountain Coffee
Type: Flavored K-Cup
Overall Rating: Two Out Of Five Coffee Mugs

First into the Keurig was Green Mountain Coffee’s offering.

This French Vanilla offered a sweet vanilla aroma with darker scents. It reminded me of a vanilla candle that had just been blown out. There may have been a hint of milk chocolate.

It had a dark roast flavor with just a hint of vanilla. Not really my cup of tea and to make matters worse, it had a bitter/chemical like after taste.

If you’re in the mood for some punishment, you can pick up a 24 pack of Green Mountain Coffee’s French Vanilla for $10.95. Although, I’d recommend against that. It’s safe to say that this one wasn’t going to satisfy my craving or make it on to any of my top lists.

The Drink: French Vanilla From Van Houtte
Type: Flavored K-Cup
Overall Rating: One Out Of Five Coffee Mugs

Next up was Van Houtte’s French Vanilla.

This one had a similar vanilla aroma, but not as sweet. It reminded me of vanilla extract. It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great.

The taste on the other hand, was bad. It had a chemical flavored vanilla taste that just didn’t sit well on my tongue.

I would definitely avoid this version of the French Vanilla at all costs. It earned one of the lowest ratings all time – a sub par one.

The Drink: French Vanilla Supreme From Gloria Jean’s
Type: Flavored K-Cup
Overall Rating: Three Out Of Five Mugs

This little experiment wasn’t going so well and I was hoping that Gloria Jean’s could advert a major crisis in my coffee mug with their French Vanilla Supreme.

I liked the aroma. It reminded me a sugar loaded vanilla frosting on a cake. I picked up on hints of sweet cherries.

In the taste department, a creamy vanilla flavor mixed a medium roast flavor.

A 24 pack of this bad boy will take $10.95 out of your wallet.

It wasn’t bad. Maybe a hundred times better than the last one. But it wasn’t the great one that I was hoping to find. This one was the perfect definition of average. It earned a three on the Daily Shot Of Coffee K-Cup scale.

The Drink: French Vanilla From Timothy’s
Type: Flavored K-Cup
Overall Rating: Three Out Of Five Coffee Mugs

The final contender in this grueling match with my tongue was Timothy’s French Vanilla.

I had high hopes when I took a sniff of this one. It had a semi-delicious vanilla aroma that had some chocolate mixed in.

The taste wasn’t bad either. It had a medium roast flavor with some serious amounts of vanilla. I could tastes the hints of chocolate too.

$10.95 is also the price for this French Vanilla

Overall, it was kind of bland though. It also earned an average three rating.

As far me, it looks like I survived this French Vanilla face off, although it looks like I’m going to need to buy some ice cream to satisfy my vanilla craving.

Fine Print.

  1. My daughter brought her Keurig home for winter break. It was fun and the coffees I tried were pretty good. I’m not a real big flavored coffee fan but this is the year I’m expanding my palate – thanks for the tips! :)

    • Dottie – great to see you and thanks for stopping by and commenting.

There’s definitely a lot of variety when it comes to K-cups, so hopefully you found some you liked.

  2. you and i seem to agree that a good flavored coffee is hard
to find, even if you don’t really like flavors in your coffee.

i have tried two of these Kcups.
the Gloria Jeans seemed my favorite.

i agree that many of the flavored Kcups have
a very distinct chemical flavor. that leads me to
believe that the majority of flavor in them
isn’t a natural chemical but more a synthetic.
it irks me that flavored coffee makers don’t show
the ingredients. in this day that seems almost
dishonest and i wish it would change.

also, my lady seems to prefer the vanilla ‘creme’
type of Kcup coffees… i noticed none of the ones you
tried have a ‘creme’ flavor added.
(maybe Gloria has ‘creme’ in her Supreme?)
the work around is to add a high quality creamer
(real cows in them) or pertinent to this comparison a vanilla creamer
to the coffee and it usually works out a LOT better.

peace to you Mike from another of the real unflavored
    coffee lovers.

    • I second that! I do wish more coffee companies would list their ingredients on their flavored coffee. It’s like they’re trying to hide something. So far the only one that I’ve seen that actually has an ingredients list is Starbucks.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for the creme. Thanks for the heads up.
